How many of us members know ASL...and can understand the videos in ASL?

Wow...90 views...but not 1 comment or post.....:hmm:

These days the site is mostly late deafened or Switched at Birth fans.

I think there's probably about 11 or so still hanging on, and you know who we are anyway.

Late deafened myself...only 2 years at NCSD and was not allowed to sign in class...so I learned ASL in the dorms...or I would not have any communication/friends at all....

Glad I did....and the more I watch ASL videos the more I understand....

Guessing I could say...."those were the days!"...Thanks, Botti.

Late deafened in the sense that what had been my very good good ear went down enough to need an aid when I was in my 30's. Left ear had been "no response" from the age of 5 following ear infection that followed measles. I tried taking ASL as an evening community college course two different times but made NO contracts to actually use it. I have since forgotten 99% of what I did learn.

Guessing you were very late deafened or HOH?...no desire to learn ASL?

I was late deafened at age 19. It took 10 years before I got hearing aids, and was advised to learn ASL at that time, I really don't know why I didn't, I got along with the hearing aids. At this time, wish I had learned when I was younger as I have a profound loss now and could use some sign.

I just saw this , I don't know ASL and try to lip read the person . I wish I did know ASL

I saw earlier but didn't have time to post.

I know ASL (learned at 18 freshman year in college). Somewhat rusty now as I haven't been a part of deaf events/groups regularly in a long time but I still try to keep up (and it helps to go visit old college friends too :)).

I can keep up with most ASL videos/vlogs but sometimes they are hard to see for various reasons, a lot of which hinges on my low vision issues- video too dark, signer signs ridiculously fast- especially fingerspelling-, signer too far away, video itself sometimes the motions are blurred (that's either because of my internet/wireless or because the video is compressed maybe when uploaded).

But... every chance I get I watch. On the other hand I don't usually do my own vlogs/videos- too shy/introvert to do it.

I saw it but wanted to give people who sign/native Deaf first chance to jump in.

As Botti said, you know me....I think....hoh <as far as I'm aware, though may have been born with minimal or mild HL that went un-detected> about 5-6 years ago now.
Have taken several ASL classes with Deaf teachers but not consistently enough <nor do I have anyone to sign with on a daily basis> to sign well. I use the captions for the vids but also watch the signer's expressions and how they do things.

Not one person suggest me to learn ASL , when it discovered I was HOH I got a hearing aid and send on my way . I got speech lessons in grade school which was a big joke . I am not even sure when I realize there was ASL.

No ASL, would like to but I'm not close to any place that teaches, not connected to the community enough to retain it if I tried, and low on funds. Maybe someday.....

Good that I'm aware now, as I've posted several videos in ASL with no captions.....

Have noticed too that many mainstreamers in school don't know ASL...and some said..."I don't socialize with deafies"....:hmm:..".so I don't know ASL."

Remembering too...some were embarrassed to sign in public....as if to distance themselves...as for myself, my speech is still intact, I still sign tho', and never was embarrassed to use ASL....I lipread for many, many years and it gets very tiring and the concentration giving headaches and eye strain....

Considering my surroundings, not an ASL user although I do understand the basics, and on occasion, some silly gestures from the hearing.
