Jurors have spared a deaf woman's life and instead sentenced her to life in prison without parole for killing an acquaintance and cutting up her body with a chain saw.

The same jurors convicted Daphne Wright, 43, last week of kidnapping and murdering Darlene VanderGiesen, 42, another deaf woman from Sioux Falls, in February 2006.

Wright smiled after the verdict was read.

VanderGiesen's mother, Dee VanderGiesen of Rock Valley, Iowa, read a statement to Wright and her mother, Carolyn Tucker of Upper Marlboro, Md., before Judge Brad Zell imposed the life sentence.

"We pray for you every day asking that God may touch your heart, that you may come to know his love and that you repent of your sins and seek God's forgiveness," VanderGiesen told Wright, indicating that God had helped the family forgive Wright.

To Tucker, VanderGiesen said: "As one mother to the other, I express my sorrow to your family. We both have lost our daughters. One to death and the other to prison time for as long as she lives. May God's grace be shown to you at this time of pain in your life."

The jury got the case about 11 a.m. Wednesday, took an hour off for dinner and indicated they had a sentence at about 8 p.m.

It was South Dakota's first capital punishment case with a female defendant.

After about eight hours of deliberation, jurors found that Wright had the depravity of mind required by law to make the murder worthy of capital punishment. But all 12 decided that she should not be executed by lethal injection for it.

The jury forewoman read the verdict. It means Wright will spend the rest of her life at the women's prison in Pierre or the penitentiary in Sioux Falls.

Prosecutors said Wright was jealous of the friendship VanderGiesen had with Wright's former lover and it turned to rage that drove Wright to kidnap VanderGiesen, kill her, burn the body and cut it apart with a chain saw.

Let's hope life in prison is forever, not few years.

oh boy!! It isnt fair that she lives!! and Darlene isnt!! damn juries!!

Wow, Let her smile for now, she may thinks life in prison is easy, let's hope she doesn't get her sentences reduced for good behavior... :(... I'm sure God has His plans for her when her time comes and she won't be smiling anymore..

IMHO it is much easier to get lethal injection than life in prison because you get to rot in cell for long long long time, instead of go sleep and forget it which is much lame!

If death penalty involves slow pain then I'd think different.

but what IF she got out of prison for good behavior?...:hmm:

The chance are very slim! I am sure this is life sentence without possible parole.
Whats more, those who lives in prison for long long long time will not live long after getting out of prison. Research shows, so I rather them stay in prison for damn long time, then the mental kicks in and kills on its own course.

Angel just so you know she got life WITHOUT PAROLE which means she will die in there.

IM stunned of this verdict reading, it will NOT bring back daphne but this woman shld rot, a slow death.

That's true, but do few of them get out even if they were sentence to life without possible parole?..

I personally believe that we need to build more prison same designed by "Alcatraz on the rockies". The "Alcatraz on the rockies" to most attorney as "The Tomb". That is what I like for those capital punishment, total isolation, it is like living in the hole without possible of escape!

Looks like Daphne Wright gets the permanently luxury life without parole is more expensive. Welcome to America. ;)

Lethal injection is completely bogus! It's not even weight the same amount of pains the victim felt before their dying. I'm in favored of electric chair, not every stated uses that, I still believe the system is broken.

I know what life without a parole means but I was refering to IF....but Diehardbiker answered my question, as he understood what I was saying..

How come they don't do electric chairs anymore?...

even tho she won't get the death penality life in prison will make her suffer forever, she doesn't deserve freedom nor does she deserve any respect. what she did destroyed MANY lives and i rather her rot and die a slow death thinking about EACH moment of the death she caused on her victim!
