hi All,

I am new to AD.

I am an IT professional interested in working for Google. I also have the required experience. But recently i became 100% deaf in my right ear.And partially deaf in my left ear. Will i be successful in getting a job in Google or for that matter any other company.Do they take in candidates with disabilities.

I am in a very depressed state.Because i am very enthusiastic software engineer and love to continue in the IT profession.

Can anybody give me advice.......Should i leave the dream of continuing in the IT profession........and should i settle for something less.........:(

No, continue your dream to work in the IT field. :)

If Google is where you would like to go work for, go for it and you can be successful whether or not you can hear.

Google is a very disability-friendly company to work for.

Understood your dream, and I believe you can.... with only one condition and that is.....

going down

going down

going down

going down

the answer is start in the bottom. You will most likely to fail if you try from the top,. Even though I could call myself IT, I started in the bottom and I have climbed to where I love my job. This is what happened to me after 20 years of refusing start work from bottom. So this proved that this one magic condition which is starting from the bottom have WORKED!

Thanks guys for your support and encouragement.

Thanks DiehardBiker for your advice...... :) But could you please explain what "start from bottom means".......what are the steps to take...

Are there anymore software professionals in this forum.......could you all please share your experiences and work life.......that would be very helpful..........

Thanks in Advance

The administrator of this site is deaf too. There are no "special" steps to take. You take the same steps that everybody does to become software professionals. learn your programming, expand your work experience, etc....

What I mean is that you need to find somewhere to start, it could be anything and usually these kinds of job ANYONE can do it, takes a while to prove that you really want to work.
This can lead you to another work, once you find the one that you want to work, start bottom from there, like just work on floor doing something simple, proving your employer your assets, they will ask you to promote to better job, and so on that is how you will success.

No one becomes CEO without starting the bottom.

Just because you're deaf doesn't mean you can't pursue a career in IT.

IT is simply anything related to computers. It doesn't mean you have to work on the phone.

"My computer is broken." "Sorry, I need to use the phone to fix it." Yeah... right.

You'll be fine. Don't let your deafness stop you. :)

Sure, you can be deaf and work in IT. There are plenty of deaf people involved in IT and computer science and some in computer engineering at RIT.

Don't give up hope tirunahari.

After I received my 4 year degree, I went to go work in the IT field for 2 years. I had 3 bites, and the last one was from google. I was considering to go join them, but I was 500 miles away from their area. I wasn't sure if I could pack up, move everything, and live on my own right away at that time. When I spoke to the interviewer, it seems that they were most interested in how determined you are, and what you have to show for it.

If you are interested in how google's interview process works as of 2007:

They don't do those special questions anymore if you've been looking into that. It's just plain simple questions - what is your nationality, ethnicity, GPA and major from previous schools, job experience, languages you can speak.

If you pass the first telephone interview, you may get a second follow up interview thru the phone. After that it's just waiting to see if they are interested enough in having you fly over to their office in Moutain View, CA and conduct a face to face interview with multiple staff. I believe usually they pay for the ticket regardless if you have been accepted or not.

There are more of us out there that work at google. A good guy for example, his website is here: http://www.ke5ter.com . Send him an email or two if you have specific questions.

I am 80% deaf and I work in the IT department (Systems Administrator-Windows Engineer) for the 6th largets bank in North Amercia. It can be very challenging at times especially when attending meetigs but for the deaf or HOH I think the IT field is one of the best career fields to be in. If you enjoy what you do thats all that matters.
