Although prisons are meant to be places where the law is strictly enforced, they continue to be places where inmates are under constant threat of sexual violence and rape.

In 2003, Congress passed the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) to eliminate sexual assaults against inmates. However, that goal still remains intangible.

In 2008, the Department of Justice estimated that 216,000 inmates were assaulted while serving time behind bars. It was also reported that younger, smaller prisoners, as well as gay and transgender males, were at the greatest risk of being sexually abused.

But even those who become victims rarely say anything. Men who are assaulted or raped in prison are too afraid to snitch, since they have been traumatized by the experience and don’t want to face being bullied even further.

Recently, the Marshall Project posted two prison orientation videos that are currently being shown in New York prisons. The videos explain how incoming inmates can avoid being raped.
