I'm going to try to get the CAT scans done, and find out if there is ANY possibility of implanting the left ear. If not, that's it. I came across a new hearing aid on Phonak's website last night (thanks to a thread posted here), and it made me rethink implanting the right ear. I still have enough hearing in my right ear, that a powerful high tech hearing aid helps. Yes, I miss some speech sounds, but visual support helps me to fill in the blanks. And with the new hearing aid, I might be able to hear more with it. I just don't want to risk whatever hearing I have left in the right ear.

If it's possible to do the left ear, I'll get the implant in that ear, no doubt about it. But the right ear, I'll leave it alone and stick with hearing aids, until it gets to the point where hearing aids are no longer of any help or benefit to me.

I've been thinking a lot about this since last night. I've emailed the CI audiologist in Denver, and she understands. She said it was very wise of me to consider EVERYTHING, the costs of traveling back and forth, how much use I get out of a hearing aid in the right ear, etc. But I do want to find out for sure if there's any hope at all for the left ear, so I'll definitely check into the CAT scans. But I don't want to mess with my right ear, not unless I feel it's absolutely necessary.

At this time, I think a new hearing aid, with all these features available (my current hearing aid is only barely 4 years old and doesn't have these features!), is the best option for my right ear, with WindBlock, Real Ear Sound, feedback control, AudioZoom, SoundRecover (it helps boost the S, SH, F sounds, etc.), etc.

Nice a nice day everyone! :)

Good for you! It sounds like those multi featured hearing aids could be worth checking out as you have some useful hearing left. If I remember correctly, you have ossification in the left ear, is that why you want to see if anything can be done in terms of implanting it? Otherwise, I would have suggested trialling the hearing aids first in the possibility that you could save money on having a CAT scan if you were really happy with them.

What hearing aid is that? Let me know cuz I would like to get better HAs.

The aid cdmeggers is talking about is the Phonak Naida. It was my post that tipped her off :giggle: I am trying it out next week! I am so excited! I will let you know how it goes!

Good idea to look into all options cdmeggers, I am doing the exact same thing.

There is ossification in the left ear, we just don't know how much. It would be nice if I could hear out of the left ear somehow, but we'll see what the CAT scans say later on. My mom's going out of her mind with my wanting to do this and that and yada yada, oops (she's saying ONE THING AT A TIME! hehe). :) But definitely need to know for sure if there's any hope for the left ear, and keep on using hearing aids in the right. :)

Phonak's Naida, as was mentioned in this post: http://www.alldeaf.com/hearing-aids-cochlear-implants/50307-rollercoaster-continues.html If it hadn't been for that post, I probably would have never even bothered to look at the Phonak website for anything new.

haha yeah, thanks to you! :P it's all good though. Even the CI audiologist is happy that I'm looking at the new hearing aid and such. She did say it was a good idea to do the CAT scans and find out if there's a possibility of implanting the left ear for later on. But like my mom says, "one thing at a time" so I'll find out how much the hearing aid costs, and we'll figure out how to pay for it.

I saw my audie today and she said it was cheaper than the aids I am using right now so I can tell you it should be less than $3,720 :giggle: By how much I don't know. I will let you know once I get a price to give you a ballpark

Gee, I checked the Phonak web site this aids have all the bells and whistles you can think of including bluetooth, one step sync is when one manually adjust one aid it will transmit the setting to the other aid and there is even a frequency compression avaiable, The max output is 144db with gain up to 86. If you are part of a rollercoaster club there is even a clip addon to hold the aid in place even when you are upside down for some reason. Usually in the past manufactures did not put everything they could in super powered aids. So it is quite a change. there more! check this video

YouTube - Phonak Naida

too bad the captions is in another language but it is pretty.

that's not captioning.. just graphic texts.. but the video is not english based. just go to Naída Phonak - movie it is in english and not a letterbox format as shown in youtube so it is bigger and widescreen. Flash required and please be patient for it to finish "buffering"

Excellent CDMeggers! Aren't there CIs which can be implanted in ossified ears?
I thought there were. You're more looking for bilateral hearing, since your left ear is pretty much dead right? I think its always worth it to experiment with different hearing aids, if you have SOME hearing, b/c hearing aids are so hit or miss.

There are, but it would depend on how much ossification there is in the left. I haven't heard anything out of the left for years and years, but if a CI would work in that ear, even just a bit, that'd be great. I keep going around in circles trying to find the source of the sound and often times I never find the source haha. weee

and Jenny, REALLY? I don't even remember how much the Supero was, Vocational Rehab paid for it. And I'll only need 1. :) but I'll find out next Thursday when I go see my audiologist. Gee, how much was the Claro? hmm.... pft I don't know, just expensive cause I got the remote control and FM unit with the Claro, new FM receiver for the Supero (continued to use the same old remote and FM transmitter).... would be nice to go all completely new with the Naida.

Yup, really! Keep in mind that price point is in Canadian dollars so I don't know how much that chages the price between here and there.

oh canadian.. nice. I wouldn't know the difference either. But I'll find out!

We're at parity right now, but we still pay more on electronics and stuff like that here because of duty charges.

Actually I think it's about parity now i.e. roughly US$1 to CAD$1. Same as the Aussie dollar - last year the Aussie dollar was only worth about 50 cents! But check anyway - the US$ is doing poorly against many major currencies at the moment.

Here is a website where you can convert to get a ball park idea:

there shouldn't be much difference since our cdn dollar is so good. Prolly not much of a difference in price.
