Anyone have any recommendations to good free online resources for learning ASL? I will be squeezing my learning into my free time so taking a course or classes is not really optimal for me. I also have created a skype account if anybody is ever bored and wants to reach out :D.

Lifeprint.com is good, even better is to go bill vicar's YouTube and watch all the videos they're entertaining and educational.

Still it is better for all of you to go into the Deaf classes with real live Deaf instructors instead of online lessons which is not the way to go.

You just don't get it. You will make mistakes not doing the proper ASL sentences and the form of your hands including the expressions. That is why I get disgusted every time a new would be wanna be signer thought they can learn from the online lessons and also from the sign language books. You can use the books while you are in the Deaf classes. If you can not get into the Deaf classes, then look up in the big cities where they have large Deaf communities.

While Bebonang gets disgusted about it, learning ASL online can be done and my opinion is that Vicars site is the best out then and it's free. I do think it's a lot harder to learn it from text books. While I agree with Bebonang that's it's better to take live classes, and best from a Deaf instructor, it's not always possible. No matter how you learn ASL, I just think it's great that you are doing so. Yes, you might make mistakes when using it to communicate, but all but the very few will help you rather than be disgusted. Do not let negative attitudes discourage you!

Bebonang the thing is .. some areas don't offer the class nesrby or at convenient times so that means we shouldn't want to learn? Take what you can. I would love to take a live class hut my college doesn't offer asl and the classes at other locations are way out the way and only offered in April

I understand how you feel about it. BUT they WILL get furious when they communicate with other ASL users anyway. It will hit them hard then They WILL take a LIVE class or get an AWESOME Deaf friend evenutally. I encourage you try not to get upset about ASL online.. ASL online is the basic thing to give them some ideas then they are ready for meeting people then they will know more.

My hearing friend who learned from ASL online. THen She met me and we talked, she realized that she signed wrong, so we hit it off together. We chatted chatted chatted as she has been picking up ASL from me and she signs beautifully. :)
