Islington rolls out new website for Deaf residents | The Gov Monitor

A fresh way of looking at how Deaf people access information has lead to the creation of a new web service in Islington.

The Deaf Portal on Islington Council’s website at Islington takes as its starting point the need to make the design of information accessible.

A large proportion of the Deaf community have difficulty reading and writing English - so the new layout makes more use of images and less use of block text.

Navigation between pages has been improved so it’s easier to find the information needed. Consultation with service users showed that many users had experienced difficulty finding much needed detail on council services, community support and advice.

Cllr Ursula Woolley, Executive Member for Heath and Adult Social Care and Deputy Leader, Islington Council said:

“We’ve revolutionised the design and layout to make finding information a breeze.

“It’s part of out commitment to raise our game for everyone in this borough and make sure no Islington resident is left behind.”

The new site incorporates information about Islington council services that is translated into BSL and is presented in a super clear format.

Laurence Tindle, a Deaf Islington resident, said: “This offers a much more clear and simple way for Deaf people to access information on the website.”

Islington is an area where I am staying for 2 weeks. My best friend live 5 minutes away walk to Islington Council.

We went there yesterday for information over BSL and deaf rights. It's interesting... I will post some information when I am back to Germany after 12th October.
