as near as I can remember (it's been a while since I went food shopping for myself 
), yes the audio part is pretty much the same thing as what is shown on the screen. Annoying thing.. "Please place the item BACK in the bag!!!" and I always mutter "its IN the bag you ninny...."
Otherwise I absolutely love the self checkouts at the grocery store, WalMart and Target. Downside is you can't buy gift cards (as I found out once) through the self service lines.
