If someone frowned on me because I use sign language, I would tell them to go away and dont bother me.
my parents had the idea that learning sign language would be as usefull as learning latin. If youre the only person that knows it, what good does it do you? they and teachers felt my hearing was good enough that learning sign wasnt necessary.
The reason for my post is the thread about parents "allowing" their child to learn sign. Like its a taboo.
I think I should learn it for fun.
I think if youre hearing is bad enough that it requires ha, u should learn to sign. when I was applying for college a lot of them required or preferred that u take 2 years of a foreign language in high school.
I have seen what happens to many kids when their parents dont learn sign language to meet their communication needs. My deaf brother is one of them and it is a very sad. It is a necessity for many deaf children for language and literacy development.
I agree 100%. the language part of the brain needs stimulation when its developing, whether if its through sounds or sign.
Also, youd think thered be some psychological detriment to the child if the parent doesnt make an effort to effectively communicate with him. Like the child isnt important enough communicate with.
That's awesome. I was born with severe profound hearing loss in both ears and sign language was forbidden for me all of my life until I learned it as an adult.
i was never forbidden to learn sign, i was always told my hearing is better than it is.
I see that tooooo many times both personally and professionally on what it does to the kids. The kids dont deserve it.
what are some of the effects? Some examples, plz? inferorty complex?

Go ahead and learn it for the fun of it. Find a deaf friend who knows ASL to teach you. I check your profile and didn't see where you are from.
Latin is very much a dead language. The only people spoke it would be those in the Vatican City. However, the English language had borrowed some words from Latin.
constant frustration
language delays
loss of motivation to learn
depression
anger
indifference towards parents
loss of self-esteem
so many more.
