i wonder is really many deaf parents influence children who enroll gallaudet and join organization by following their parents' member of. How comes like that, why did some of them not turn go to csun or other college base on their major?
Yeah, Many deaf parents attend to Gallaudet. They influence to their deaf children go to Gallaudet.
Bingo, you are right that many deaf parents want their children to attend Gallaudet University because their parents was graduated from Gallaudet University. But nat84 is also correct indicating that deaf students should choose the kind of field or major that have available in Gallaudet. They will also have to transfer to other colleges to enroll for their interest in the field. If the field that they are interest is not available at Gallaudet, then that is where they have to go into another college in another state. CSUN is another popular college with deaf program in California and many other college in New York, etc.
Just have to find the right college with Deaf program which is important for the students to know what is going on in their classrooms to fit with their majors.
I hope I am making myself clear to you, eh?
I don't like the idea of parents trying to influence their kids to doing the same thing the parents did.
If it's school, I would rather my kids go to a college that has a good interpreter program as well as a program that best suits my kids' interests.
If it's a Greek or non-Greek organization, I would rather my kids join a group that best fits their interests and morals.
Of course, I would expect them to take things seriously.
For instance, if my kid liked computers... I would encourage him to join a computer club. If he was struggling with time management, then I would encourage him to focus more on school and less on that computer club until he gets his time management in order.
I've seen some kids at Gallaudet who take their deaf pride so far that they reject anything else unless it's under their parents and under Gallaudet.

plus - isn't it true that if the students go to same school that their parents graduated from... they get some kind of tuition discount?
I meant any reputable universities... i'm not too sure about that either.... but I do know for sure that students do get free tuition if their parent(s) work at same universityFor Gallaudet? Never heard of that.

Lots of hearing poeple especially those from prominant familes try to influence their children to attend their alma matter. Hearing people do it too so what's the big deal?

Well, from my personal experience there aren't that many deaf kids chose Gally after their parents who went to Gally, however. But yes, there were a handful of them did especially in the past. I cannot say to be certain about those as of nowadays.
I have two friends (ISD classmates) chose NTID instead of Gally even their parents graduated from Gally before... while I know one friend who graduated a year before me went to Gally just like his parents did.
I went to both NTID and Gally so I don't see that many did like this thread poster stated or suggested, however. Mine was back in the 80s-90s... so times sure can be quite different, you know.
Tell you truth that I was told by numbers of my Gally friends that nowadays there are lot more mainstream students attending Gally... increasing sufficiently after late 90s and still do. I think it was roughly 50% deaf/50% mainstream students there as I was told last time. Interesting!
So things are quite different now than it was in the past at Gally indeed.
(like Tousi stated above) True so!
