I don't know who "snitched"; I found out about it much later.
I think part of that rule is liability coverage.
We also have a rule in our employee handbook that prohibits giving clients any brochures or fliers about anything. We can't invite them to anything.
We can't request phone numbers or email addresses from consumers/clients.
