I lurk and sometimes post at the HLAA boards. Does anyone else think they're REALLY out of touch about things like health care costs? Like they bombard the boards with the latest thing about the middle ear implants, and the upgrades to CIs and all the great technology.....but they don't seem to understand that a lot of the technology comes at a HUGE cost...meaning inflating insurance premeniums........It's almost like HLAA is a house organ for the hearing aid/CI companies. Maybe that's why their magazine is so Hearing Health 101, and written so boringly.

I think they are so out of toch with reality that I sometimes wonder if they have created a fantasy world for themselves. *gag*

Never been there, but I know some of our members belong. Didn't somebody recently get very angry with you for putting down a group they love???

No. You posted while I was still writing. I should have quoted. Deafdyke really came in for some angry sentiment last time she was slamming Hlla.

I will admit, I went there a couple of times when I first went total deaf, but I didn't like a lot of what I was seeing and never went back.

LOL....I'm not bashing their approach, although I do admit it is not exactly interesting. I'm saying that they seem to be VERY out of touch with the impact that being dependent on hearing technology has. Like they seem to assume everyone has great health insurance that covers CIs and the latest technolgies etc.......they yammer on and on about things like MEIs or whatever without realizing that not everyone has access to top notch healthcare....and I mean I really think that it's almost a house organ. Before Coachlear bought entific, you NEVER heard anything about BAHA....now it's all over the hearing health world.....kinda weird.

To me that would indicate their membership is made up of prosperous late deafened people who want to hear.

That is a big business, and makes up a much larger percentage of the population of deaf people than do those of us born deaf.

Wirelessly posted (droid)

Our local chapter calls itself a consumer organization. Basically, the "hearing impaired" industry runs the organization as a marketing tool. Nothing wrong with this if that's what you're looking for. Groups in other locations may be different.

Try your local chapter and see if you like it.

I've read through their stuff, talked with couple people there and looked around at way people have discussed things on HLAA -related blogs, sites etc ....since I don't consider myself "impaired" <not meaning that's what you implied sally, just explaining> and they don't seem to mention or support ASL/sign languages and focus on "fixing" or "eradicating" - it's not for me. Maybe for some hoh or late-deafened. but not me.
Based on what I've seen, I agree with sally-

Totally! The thing is.......they post stuff on their IPhones and then whine about the high cost of hearign aids and CIs.....that's just....ummmm OK.
