Hi. My son will be starting Kindergarten in the Fall. He is curently in VPK with an interpreter. I'm looking for anyone with research information on how keeping the same interpreter for the lower grades will benefit the child. Our state believes he should have a new interpreter each year. Thanks.

I can understand rotating terps. It's good for the kids to be exposed to more than one language model with some variety in signing style. It also lets them know that there is more than one signing adult in their school environment. It create more independence, plus the student isn't "stuck" in case they get a bad fish one year.

It would be nice if the children could have continuing teams of terps rather than one terp per year. That way, they could get the variety yet still have some familiarity at the same time.

Make sure the interpreter is qualified and is fluent in ASL not just a beginning signer.

hard to have the same terp annually. it is an unreasonable request. At work, I have different interpreters for the staff meetings.

I knew a girl in school who ostensibly had the same terp K-12, but I have no idea how she swung it or if they had to fight for it.

Many of the terps at the middle school I work at do follow their student as they move through the grades. So, it might not be all that unreasonable. But, you still might not want to do it for the reasons Reba said though.
