You all would be surprised by how many "warnings" hearing people get about the deaf community, even from ASL teachers.
That's exactly it!
so Samantha, What kinds of warnings did you get?
I did it because I almost felt like I was an intruder.
what is wrong?
Well, my ASL teacher told us that we must IMMEDIATELY identify ourselves as hearing. Very understandable but the impression I got was that if we didn't, we'd all be stoned to death.
Nothing is wrong anymore. I really enjoy this site. I've met a lot of really great people. I can't wait til I'm fluent in ASL. It's a true determination of mine. I think it's going to broaden my world to so much! Thanks for asking though =)
I was laughing so hard for a moment there I thought my dog was going to get up and dial 911 for me!
Oh lord that's funny! Don't worry about that. Maybe in a small town that might be prudent, but in my area (DC/Baltimore) the deaf community is more like "come as you are." If we want to know, we will ask.
your welcome I am interesting I love question to you!
I am experience ASL
LOL I'm glad you got some amusement from it. I was like scared though. Especially since I'm going to a Deaf Festival this weekend. I was like OMG OMG OMG people are going to think I'm rude if I can't answer them back. What if I forget to identify myself as hearing? I was panicking. Being on here has really set my mind to ease.
im just a bit shy and i dont want to end up unintentionally saying something that may hurt other people's feelings.
May I call you Travis? I'm glad you like to ask me questions. You can ask me anything you want
where you live in?
