Almost every (maybe every) newbie hearie say something in introduction how we should tell them if they say anything offensive. Interesting they all say this.

They're nervous about being around people who are different. That's natural. Soon, they will find out that we're not so different.

You all would be surprised by how many "warnings" hearing people get about the deaf community, even from ASL teachers.

We are, after all, a mysterious group! What's not to like!?!

We have a secret language that cannot be spoken or accurately written down. While not international, we can communicate 10 times better in foreign countries with others like us compared to the spoken only languages. :cool2:

We have an ultra cool and very secret hand shake. :naughty:

Membership requirements are pretty steep yet, there is no annual membership dues!

After all the difficulties growing up it's nice to have a place where I can sit back, relax, watch the scenery walk by.

So what if we get an ignorant comment now and then? They get corrected, then they either leave us forever or they learn, pull up a chair, and relax with us! :) Life is good! :)

so Samantha, What kinds of warnings did you get?

Well, my ASL teacher told us that we must IMMEDIATELY identify ourselves as hearing. Very understandable but the impression I got was that if we didn't, we'd all be stoned to death.

I guess my opinion hearing nervous shy and scared something!

what is wrong?

Nothing is wrong anymore. I really enjoy this site. I've met a lot of really great people. I can't wait til I'm fluent in ASL. It's a true determination of mine. I think it's going to broaden my world to so much! Thanks for asking though =)

:laugh2::laugh2::laugh2: I was laughing so hard for a moment there I thought my dog was going to get up and dial 911 for me! :giggle:

Oh lord that's funny! Don't worry about that. Maybe in a small town that might be prudent, but in my area (DC/Baltimore) the deaf community is more like "come as you are." If we want to know, we will ask.

im just a bit shy and i dont want to end up unintentionally saying something that may hurt other people's feelings.

LOL I'm glad you got some amusement from it. I was like scared though. Especially since I'm going to a Deaf Festival this weekend. I was like OMG OMG OMG people are going to think I'm rude if I can't answer them back. What if I forget to identify myself as hearing? I was panicking. Being on here has really set my mind to ease.

Christe, Sometimes you just have to take a little risk. If you say something I find offensive, I will let you know but I won't beat you over the head with it. Life is all about taking risks, falling, getting back up and moving on.
