I'm sure everyone don't bother to read manual of how to use the laptop/tablet? Right?? Yeah..it's man thing...

Anyway, remember back on my old post about that I got new Dell XPS 12 convertible and had it for year now. So, with my old laptop that have 128 GB SSD and motherboard is shot. So, I decided to do something with a spare part, one is that I can convert this internal 128 GB SSD into external storage drive. So, I brought enclosure that fit mini SATA type connector (mSATA) for only 12 bucks. It come with USB cable...(jeesh what are we going to do with all those USB cables I have here!). So, I put it together and presto! It's a nice card. See pix below. Then I want to test it out on my Dell XPS 12 since SSD use less power than the mechanical type hard drive. So, I plugged usb in and suddenly saw the external SSD powering up!! I was like sh*t, I must have left the XPS 12 running!!! So, I open up the lid and nothing was on. So, I checked to turn on the XPS and it started to boot up normally. What is the hell. So, I decided to shut it down but the power to the external drive still on!! Then I thought I give a try using other USB port and there's no power. Then I decided to plugged the USB back in the first place and it powered up!! I was perplexed. Ok, time to pull up the manual (yeah...manual get it??) and see if it say anything different on each 3 USB ports. Behold!! Yes, on one USB port provide power even laptop is off. It can be use as BACKUP POWER!! Awesome.... like if my smartphone battery is getting to low or dead, I can just simply plug this to the laptop to recharge the smartphone! It did happen to me one time that I don't have the 120V adapter with me, only USB cable. Dang! Now I know!!

Now that is cool to have a backup power to any USB type devices.....

You just found it out?

Our Macbook have same like that for 5 years.

For PC laptop. You see USB with "power" logo. that's mean recharge during laptop shut down.

What type of USB your external SSD use?

Yes, I'm aware of MacBook have it but didn't know that Dell XPS 12 now have it.

It's a 20" USB to mini USB type cable... if that what you are talking about? You see it in one pix above.

No, I mean type of speed as USB 2.0 or USB 3.0.

oh..USB 2.0 interface...

Why USB 2.0 on external SSD? You lost a lot of transfer speed.

I tried around 400MB of files from macbook Air to flash USB 2.0 and it took around 10 seconds. So I tried another flash USB 3.0 and it took around 1 seconds.

Image if you have 4 GB of files and it would take 1 minutes for USB 2.0 and probably 6 seconds for USB 3.0.

I'm little confused... are you saying that you're not aware that you can re-charge with your smartphone plugged in laptop? It has been like that for years.

Why the rush? You know? I do want 3.0 but couldn't find the case that will fit 1.8" SSD mSata and I found that case look nicer. Not having 3.0 is no big deal to me.

I know that. I was just saying....

Smile, it's was more of hit or miss, not all of Windoze laptops do have USB power during shutdown or power off laptop or not come with it. But really that I didn't think much about it when buying laptop and to check to be sure it come with it you know? When you buy laptop, did you check it out to be sure it come with one USB port that provide power during shutdown mode? nah... Just happen that laptop that I brought have it!

Easy to find.

Newegg.com - Slim Super Speed mSATA To USB 3.0 SSD Enclosure Adapter Converter. High Transfer Rate and Durable Aluminum Casing.

Faster transfer may save a lot time and save laptop's battery life too. I can't help since you got powerful and expensive for SSD and powerful laptop with USB 3.0 but cheap and outdated for USB 2.0 enclosure.

USB 3.0 is very friendly for live boot USB as Hiren's.Boot, Acronis true image, Ubuntu, etc.
