OCALA, Fla. -- A search is under way for the parents of a newborn who was found when a driver in Ocala spotted the infant's hand sticking out of a box that was left on the side of an isolated dirt road.

The driver made the discovery Saturday evening at the intersection of Northwest 17th Street and Northwest 24th Avenue in Ocala. The newborn was found in a QVC cardboard box, along with a blanket, an article of clothing and a diaper.

Paramedics told WKMG-TV that the girl, who is about 3 to 7 days old, appeared to be in good health. Ocala police said the child may have been abandoned the night before being found.

The child has been placed in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.

"It's terrible that someone would do that. I would rather them drop (the baby) on my doorstep than to do that. Take (the child) somewhere safe. They say ants had got on (the infant)," said Lois Dowdy, who lives near the location where the child was found.

"It's very sad. It's very dangerous. There are snakes out here," said Florastine Lee, who also lives nearby. "A lot of dangerous animals come out at night that could have eaten up that child, and that child did not ask to come into the world."

"I really don't understand why somebody would do something like that to a child," said Ernest Cox, who lives nearby.

Ocala police were searching for a woman driving a gray pickup with a white topper who was seen in the area on Friday at about 7:30 p.m.

"I hope they find the parents and get things resolved," Dowdy said.

"I think that child deserved better than what that mother did," Florastine said.

State law allows for an unwanted newborn to be left at a hospital, fire station or other emergency medical service station without it being considered child neglect.

terrible... if they don't kid, simple left at what the last paragraph told so. Sheesh

Some people can be such an idiot. I'm real grateful that the baby is alive and is healthy. I'm just guessing that maybe the parent wasn't aware that the law allows them to drop the unwanted baby off at a hospital, fire station or other emergency medical service station.

Very sad but at least the baby wasn't thrown into the dumpster. The baby would have less chances of surviving had she been thrown into a dumpster (because babies thrown into dumpster often are not noticed due to all the trash on top of the babies), at least she was left somewhere where someone could see her, even thought was still very dangerous with wild animals and stuff.

I also feel sorry for the mother. The mother probably was not thinking straight and probably freaked out when she realized she could not handle the baby. Babies are a very huge responsibility and some mothers sometimes do not realize that until the baby has come into the world. Even with all the resources out there sometimes some mothers still fall through the cracks and does something like this and as a result their babies falls through the cracks too and many do not make it. Who knows what was going though the mother's head? It's really sad. She was probably very embarrassed, ashamed, and scared shitless as well as very stressed out and very confused about how to handle a newborn baby. I don't think the mother intended to harm the baby - the fact that she at least put her in a box, left her with a blanket and a piece of clothing and a diaper, on the side of the road instead of tossing her into a dumpster shows that the mother at least doesn't want the baby to be dead but is probably hoping someone will pass by and find the baby and take the baby to a safe place. Not very smart but at least the baby wasn't in the dumpster and is alive. She probably was scared that if she took the baby to a hospital or someplace like that she would be identified. Not all mothers know that it's legal to take their baby to a hospital, police or fire station and leave the baby there without being identified. I also have a feeling that the mother could be a teenager or have a serious drug addiction.

The baby was found in the "on the side of an ISOLATED road"....not much traffic there....probably an old dirt road...and since it's isolated, the mother did not expect anybody to ride by there.....but for the grace of God, someone did!

A baby in a dumpster would have a better chance of being found than this baby on an isolated road.....people all around, taking their trash out, etc., could hear it cry.....the baby on an isolated road....no one around....could cry all night long!

This baby was bitten by mosquitoes....subject to animals looking for food....

Do I feel sorry for the mother? Hell No! Whether she is a teen, drug addict or she is crazy, she gets no sympathy from me!

I hope they find that Mother....she deserves a long prison sentence.

More publicity for leaving the baby at a hospital with no penalty might have helped.

Yeah, or even going to Walmart and leaving the baby there! So many, many options!.....Things of this nature really get under my skin because the children are helpless and depend upon the adult to survive.

I agree with Lucia and her post #4.

I would like to add Lucia´s post -

It could be that teenage mother is afraid of her parents ?

I know few who were scared of their parents... They hide their pregnancy and gave birth secret and left baby front of priest house and clinic. The people from authorties spoke via radio and TV, promise to not arrest mother but want to help them. I guess mothers heard thru radio and returned voluntarily, telling them who they are. Make blood test... etc. Few of some mothers are scared because of their parent´s religous belief.

Yeah, many parents tell their teenagers that they would be kicked out of the house if they got pregnant or got their girlfriends pregnant. This frightens teenagers, and this is one of the many results of this kind of pressure from parents and other people. I think parents should be talking to their teenagers about safe sex options instead of just telling them that they would be homeless if they were to accidentally become pregnant.

please don't say that - or we'll have some crazy crackhead momma droppin' off her baby at the Customer Service desk and sayin; "I wanna return this, I got no receipt, but I wanna return this!"

But I think it is federal law now that as long as a child is left at a hospital, fire/ems/police station the mother cannot be charged with child neglect/abandonment and no charges can be filed.

Well, I'd rather see a baby dropped off at Walmart in customer service and left there around people who would help it.....than for a mother to throw it out on an isolated dirt road or leave a newborn in a motel room.

At least the baby would survive! Those other 2 babies were incredibly lucky!

You can kick a dog or a cat out of the house, and they will survive by eating garbage, even an adult could survive it (such as the homeless)....but a newborn baby?

I do not understand it. Florida has a law that a mother can drop of a newborn at a safe place.

Fire Dept, police station, hospitals. Not questions asked.

Yet people still dump them on the side of the road!

I do not feel sorry for the mother! I do not care what her going on in her head , it no excues for leaving a baby in a box to dies! I hope the mom is found and goes to jail for this horrible crime !

:eek3: Poor child! I am glad they found the baby. Thank goodness that the baby is alive and healthy! Gee... I wonder what was the mother thinkin' when she abandoned her child like this ?

Most likely the mother is a frightened teenager who didnt know about the law or is a drug addict out of her mind. Who knows?

And probably uninsured and could not come up with the money to pay to terminate the pregnancy.

Agreed. ;)

Exactly - which is why we need to have MORE sex education in school at younger ages so that these kids will understand that abortions cost money - babies cost money. If you don't have the means to take care of a child then just don't have sex period!
