Since it was an "older man"...my guess too is the wife probably was very sick....So it's not all really clear here...and feel the man was being very secretive about it all....A lot of older couples still believe in their vows..."til death do us part"....He had no plans to divorce his wife.
Same as for the gay couple...they loved each other very much....So perhaps in the eyes of many Christian people...it's a sin....but I do applaud both of them for staying with their partners, taking care of them in the best or only way they could.
