Remember him? I do! It was so sad that he left the earth at young age! :( Make sure you look at his slideshows on the left side of the screen.

Australia marks 'crocodile hunter' Irwin's death - Yahoo! News

SYDNEY (AFP) - Australia marked the first anniversary of the death of environmentalist and television "crocodile hunter" Steve Irwin in a low-key manner with his family commemorating privately, reports said Tuesday.

But tributes flowed for the way his widow Terri and daughter Bindi, 9, have conducted themselves since Irwin was killed by a stingray barb that pierced his chest during filming on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Bindi Irwin has become a media star in her own right since her father's death, promoting his causes, speaking at events to commemorate him and starring in her own television programs. The couple also had a three-year-old son, Bob.

"Behind the positive faces they have shown the world since that dreadful day, there can be no doubt there is still deep sorrow and lasting pain," Sydney's Daily Telegraph said in an editorial.

"So too for those who respected and admired Irwin for his boundless enthusiasm for life, his determination to make every second of it worthwhile.

"They will have their own thoughts to content themselves with, their own sadness."

Irwin, who was 44 when he died, became world-famous for his daring stunts with dangerous animals but he was also an environmentalist who put much of the money he made towards promoting related causes.

He also ran a zoo with is wife in northeastern Queensland state. The Australia Zoo continues to be open to visitors.

Irwin's death prompted a national outpouring of grief, with tributes flowing in from all sections of society, including Prime Minister John Howard, who described Irwin as a "wonderful and colourful son" of Australia.

A public celebration of Irwin's life is to be held on September 15.

wow.. I didn't realize it's been one year since his death...he was young.. I liked his documentary films .

Yea..1 year already! Time flies! I do too sometimes if there is nothing is on TV! :) It is sad that his life ended at young age :(

Its a shame true role models like Steve Irwin do not get thrust into the spotlight by the same margin that some socially, and morally inept sports athletes do..

I do miss that show.. The funniest one I saw was where he was off on the side of a highway next to a metal railing picking up black widow spiders.. and he said.
"Oi! here is the dangerous venomous black widow spider.. see her crawling around on my hand.. they can be deadly..but I'm in NO REAL DANGER!"

I just stood there in awe.. not only at that remark.. but the fact that he was actually picking them up and playing around with them..

Now I don't mean people or kids should do the things he does.. no.. by no means that.. but he was not doing anything he did not know the consequences of.. and would take measurable risks to show and inform the viewers of the various animals and creatures he was showing.

omg, it's 1 year already? RIP Steve Irwin. :( He will be never forgotten.

Wow I didnt realize its been one year already! TJ and I loved his shows! So sad to see him gone as he was so young! TJ and I never forgot him as we still do talk about him and the crocs!

The family stay busy by starring in their own shows and now Bindi is a star. I am sure Steve is proud of his daughter! I just wish he is there to see her thru everything. They were so close! :(

Yeah, the time flies really quickly ! I remembered, my beloved husband, Andrew was upset and grief when he heard it on the news. He had his heart attack on Sept 6th and stayed in ICU until 11th.

He passed away Nov 2, 2006. Unbelievable, it is 10 months ago. It seems like yesterday. I remember how exactly what happen to him. It was so horrible to remember everything.

I sometime wonder if Steve and Andrew are gathering in heaven ? It is hard to believe, they died at such young age 40's.

I'm sure Steve Irwin would have been disappointed to hear that remark towards the stingray. He would have loved it just the same as always. I guess he would have liked to hear that his death was not in vain, but brought an increased awareness and appreciation towards all creatures on this earth.

That was always his mission, dead or alive.
