Hi Shel, this isn't an argument I've ever heard in real life for getting a CI. Most people I know want to expand their communication options (or those of their children), not gain acceptance by some group or another. It's not like having a gang tattoo or a secret handshake, a superficial recognition factor. That would be like saying that someone wears glasses or contacts to be accepted by the seeing world. It's more likely that they just want to see, not to be loved for their glasses or to reject their other senses.
I've heard many people complain that those who wear a hearing aid or a CI are rejecting deaf culture, but I've never before heard anyone complain about people with CI s being *too* accepting of ASL/deaf culture ("when will it stop?"). This is a hearing aid and cochlear implant forum and you are wondering why people with cochlear implants would think to come here to share common experiences with other deaf people wearing cochlear implants?
