Yes, my career as a professional interpreter is over.

I'm almost finished with my coursework in my master's degree in education, and starting in the fall I have been asked to teach the writing classes in the new deaf studies program at the college where I work. I am also developing the writing curriculum as my master's thesis.

I'm very excited about this change in career. I've loved interpreting but it's become clear to me that I want to progress in the field of education (both hearing and deaf). This opportunity to teach at the college level as well as continue working with deaf students is incredible and I feel very lucky to have so many people believing in me that I can do this.

However, taking on this job, plus planning my wedding, plus health issues mean that I don't have any time or focus left over for continuing my progress as an interpreter, and that simply isn't appropriate for a professional. I'll continue volunteering, for sure, and will likely substitute here and there, but essentially I'm going to have to stop thinking of myself as an interpreter.

Now -- should I change my name to Teacherpretrator? :giggle:

oh wow, that is cool and good luck with that position and cute to bringing it up with the new sn, lol

Congrats your dreams...

btw now your sn may stick w/it as long you've known as interpreter for long time ages and until today you got a another job field..

Hey, Terpertrator! Best you in this new endeavor, on your upcoming marriage, etc!

Hope you will continue coming here, too. These are mere words, I know, so.... I want you to know how much I mean that sentiment as I meander across this screen in an effort to glean the appropriate words to convey it from this teeming orb! I've scraped out every nook and cranny to get it across... so I hope that'll make ya guilty to do so! :fingersx:

Sheesh, where's Hemingway when I need him??

Congrats, Interpretator. Welcome to the legions of us trying to make the college experience better for deaf students. I look forward to your continued postings!
