It’s funny how you think you’ve got it bad, until you meet somebody who has it even worse and puts it all into perspective for you. I’m only deaf in my right ear. I have normal hearing in my left. My biggest fear is that when I get older I will lose my ability to understand speech, because as my hearing degrades in old age I won’t have another ear to help compensate. But I’ve had a lot of people tell me that I am damned lucky to have one ear—and they’re right. It’s all a matter of perspective.
