My 4 year old son was dignosed with HOH alittle over a year ago. It was (and sometimes is) very hard for me to come to terms with it. I started teaching him ASL almost a year ago and was (and still am) very amazed at his progress. He was never interested in learning colors (for example) till we put the sign with it. We are up to over 300 signs and he uses them daily. We are using verbal communication as well. I've been advised by many people not to teach him signs b/c he can hear (with his aids) and he will be able to speak at some point that signing will just slow him down. I ignored all of them and taught him anyways. It's been a huge blessing to learn and use ASL.
I have 2 other children that are 9 (has ADHD) and 6. All boys! I just left my husband of 3 years in November. I'm trying to learn all I can about my son's conditions as well as my own. I suffer from severe depression and have been told by other people I could be bi-polar as well. I brought it up to my doctor and she didn't say anything about it. I also suffer from anxity and hate being around people. Rather it's family or not.

Okay so there is alittle about me. I hope I can make friends (online) and understand more about these speed bumps we are working over.

Thanks
Lori

Welcome! I'm sure there are a few on here that could help you with some of problems you are having. Look forward to seeing you post in the days ahead.

We welcome new people with open arms, dont we all? I hope your progress with your boys goes well, esp your HoH son, teaching him ASL is the blessing thing you have done with him, it is making more easier to communicate and all. We look forward to read your future posts.

Enjoy alldeaf! :D

Herzlich Willkommen :)

You can find plenty of information and feedback here.

Hi Chris
Welcome between us !

Everything isn't lost, your son will be able to learn how to speak. And even if he doesn't speak, where's the problem, since he can communicate ? I mean, the most important is being able to communicate, even if we don't speak, isn't it ?

Welcome again

Hi Lori!
YEAH a hoh kid learning ASL.....that's what I like to see. In response to the people who are asking you abt why you're teaching him ASL even thou he can hear, say that you want him to function both with and without his hearing aids. Plus, knowing ASL brings all the advantages that being fluent in a second spoken language brings.

lori,

i just wanted to say that i think it's GREAT that you are teaching your son asl. :)

by the way, i noticed in your post that other people said you could be bipolar. i have bipolar disorder myself (atypical bipolar I disorder with ultradian rapid cycling to be exact) and i've been diagnosed with it now for 2 years. if you ever have any questions about bipolar, feel free to send me a message under my profile.

one final note. if you're interested in finding out whether or not you have depression or bipolar, i recommend that you speak to a psychiatrist. doctors don't have the experience necessary to be able to diagnose mental illnesses or prescribe psychotrophic medications.

It's great to you teaching your son sign :D, way to many hearing families trust the "experts" when they say not to teach them sign  .

Last night my teacher said this and I couldn't agree more:
Why is teaching a hearing child sign language considered to be a benefit to language development but teaching a Deaf/Hoh child his natural language(asl) considered to cause a delay? :hmm:

:welcome: to AllDeaf forum. I am glad that you are teaching him to sign. Keep up the work with him whether he speak or not. Signing with ASL is a lot better than lipreading. Anyway, I hope you have fun reading and posting all the threads here. See you around.
