From a hearing person's perspective, I would say yes, some things are private. Hearing people don't have super hearing, so we can't hear everything. 
Also, I try NOT to hear every conversation. It would drive me nuts if I listened to everyone's cell phone chatter. Some women continue yakking even when they're in the toilet stall in a public restroom.
