I don't know all that much about cued speech but I've watched a few videos about it and I'm very interested. I just got my CI but of course I'm still hard of hearing and won't pick up all speech. So I'm thinking it would be a great thing to learn.

So I'm wondering if any of you have and advice on learning it. I have some people in my life that I'm sure will be willing to learn it at well.

Hey buddy,

Depends on where you are in the country (or overseas), there may be workshops from month to month. There are also camps this summer which give you a chance to immerse yourself in a cueing environment. Check out National Cued Speech Association to begin with. From there the organization can refer you to whoever would best fit your needs.

wow, that looks neat. I went to the website and watched the video. I wonder how many people in different areas know cued speech??

I don't have any advice, per se but I understand it takes only a couple of weeks to master Cued. Ask Netrox here; he has extensive knowledge/experience with it.

well i used to go to deaf school in australia that use cued speech . to my understanding its waste of time.. the school i went to was strict of oral only no auslan signing . if you use it you will get the cane strike on ur hand!!!! so i thought at the time isnt cueing a sign language. i argued that to my principle !!! anyway its not good idea cos you would expect public to cue for you as well .... so it best to learn to lipread and listern without any sign language at all . i know a friend of mine has a habit of using cue in public but tried stopped using it which was hard for him. the local looked at him like hes retard or somehing ....

If I had to choose between lipread/listen and cue speech, I'll choose cued speech.

If I had to choose between cued speech and ASL, I choose ASL

Lipreading is too much work and your train of thoughts is often interrupted with gambling of what you think the person said.

Your friend should not have to stop cuing if it helps him. If he doesn't know Auslan, and want to stop cuing, Auslan may help him stop.
