Hello All,
I am hearing and I want to learn ASL. Long story short, my Brother is deaf and I want to learn ASL. I have been attempting to teach myself for a while with little success. So if anyone has some advice/tips, it would be great.
:ty: for your time,
Michael

There are several people at this thread who can help you.

A question though. Why don't you have your brother teach you? Why haven't you been communicating with your brother up to now?

Bottesini,
Thanks for your quick reply and great question! hhmmm..well I will give you part of the long story. My Bro and I were adopted from another country by different families. My parents never bothered to get me to learn asl, also I only saw my bro very few times growing up. I never thought i'd ever see my bro much either, I take blame for not learning asl too.

I think we've seen each other maybe 15-20 times in our life (him 36 me 35). We always kept in touch by relay service, some mail and some email from time to time. A few years ago he asked me to be his best man at his wedding in MS! I was shocked but very honored. We have kept in touch on a regular basis ever since and we have seen each other more and more.

He has given me many tips about asl, ie; books, aslpro.com, deaf meets and so on. But I still haven't grasped the language yet. I have know one to practice with on a daily basis, I want to change all that.

Anyways that is the short version of the story. I know A-Z finger spell and just a few words. It is more than time for me to learn more.

I know you think relay, mail, email... seem distance and all as not the same as talking in person, but it is to him.

Good on you, Michael! It's never too late to learn ASL to communicate with your loved ones.

Is there a community college near where you are? They usually offer ASL classes at night and for affordable tuition costs.

As far as feeling like you need to grasp the language before you go to a deaf event or such. Well, that's a bit of a catch-22. The only way you're going to learn is if you jump right in. It might be scary at first. Some Deaf people are not always welcoming of hearing strangers, especially ones with limited/no ASL, but there are many more who will be happy to help you learn as long as you are gracious and thankful.

Stick around and get a feel for things. It will help as you make your journey into the language.

Welcome to AD!

p.s. I love Bob Marley!

Hello Thanks for your replies,
@ deafgal001 you are correct it is him. I assure you I wasn't complaining, I just want to learn more and was telling a story.
@ TheWriteAlex I haven't been to a official all deaf meet yet. When I went to MS however, there was a dinner with my bro and friends. All were deaf, that was fun and everyone was very understanding.
Have a great all!
Michael
