I hope you don't mind me joining your website. I'm working on getting my certification and it's a struggle for me. I'm 40-something and never had the pleasure of knowing Deaf people or sign language until about 3 years ago. I've finished my Associate's degree and the ITP. I have a job working with deaf persons but still don't have the self-confidence I need in order to facilitate equal communication between deaf and hearing.
 
Wow...I just realized how stuffy my introduction sounds! I'm really laid-back and am already enjoying reading the threads here. BTW - I'm in Ft Worth, TX.

If you want to be the BEST then total immersion into the deaf world would be the best and quickest way to becoming so. I've known some very wonderful ASL interpreters who have done just that. Live, work, befriend and play with deaf people in their area and learn the hows, whys and wherefores of Deaf Culture.
Some I know have gotten SO good that when I first met them I honestly thought they were deaf until I heard them speak.
It's possible, it's do-able and it's achievable. How quickly it happens is up to you.

Do a search for deaf culture do's and don'ts it's saved me a couple times really being pretty new. The Thread is long but should answer you question well.
 
Suzette welcome to AllDeaf. as my SN states I am going to going my interpreting license also. But I envy you. I am not finished with my AA in Early Childhood Education yet. When I am, I will move on to the ITP in my area. Good luck & the more you go to deaf events, the more you will get over your shyness.
