I have a son that was born really premature and due to some meds, he was hard of hearing until he lost his hearing due to chemotherapy (liver cancer), he is now ok. He had a cochlear implant put in back in feb 08, he just started a school with a special ed program, for the deaf/hard of hearing. It is really difficult for us to communicate with him, I really want to learn sign language, but there is a problem, where we live I don't think there's a lot of options. We can't afford to pay for private lessons or anythin like that, he is learning at school, but what sould I do???? I trully want and need to learn. I use the computer to at least learn basic words, but that is not enough, I need to learn as much as possible, because, I think he prefers signing rather than using his voice. I don't have any problems with that, except that, I can't seem to fine a way of learning it. Does anyone have any idea what can I do??? I live in Ocala Florida, and I would love to be able to learn!!!

You should look for deaf mentoring program or early intervention program where they send a deaf person to your house and teach you, your son and family ASL.

Or contact Florida school for the deaf and see if they can help you.

Ask deafdyke to help you as she seems quite knowledgeable about this sort of things.

Good luck!

Bill Vicker's is great! It has helped me and there is no charge.

Call Cindy Day who is the Executive Director of the Outreach and Parent Services at the FSDB. Her phone number is (904) 827-2221. You can also email her at
dayc@fsdb.k12.fl.us. The Outreach program is supposed to work with parents of deaf children in the state. She can refer you to the person who is serving in your area. She also can tell you of resources that are available to you.

Feel free to PM if you need more help with this.

lol. Ahhhh computer lingo. I have the j/k thing down. It took me awhile when I first started chatting when people would ask me ASL? I'd gawk and think, "How do they know?" Now I realize they were asking for my age, sex, and location and not if I knew ASL. HA!
