Hey all,

I am taking some summer courses and I have my hearing aids on tonight during class. I was watching the interpreters and then I realized I could hear the odd words! When I started really concentrating I was getting a few words each sentence, sometimes enough to make a sentence! It was pretty cool! It took a lot of concentration though and I only did it for 30 minutes and then was exhausted and watched the terps without worrying about the sounds!

Jenny,

That's awesome! :D What do you think accounted for your ability to hear words for 30 minutes? Does your hearing fluctuate?

Congrats! My own audiologist noticed I also understood some words and he says it's simply a matter of training your brain and then your speech comphrension shall improve. I am able to understand 70% of what my dad says with my back to him. He says everyone(with measurable residual hearing) can train to have good speech comphrension by wearing their HAs and training their brains.

If this is true, how come I haven't been able to understand speech with HAs since 1995? I wore my aids 16 hours/day. According to all of my former HA audis (3 in 20+ years), I was always very good at using my residual hearing.

because it's case-by-case. apparently HA doesn't work for you.

Then why does deafdude continue to insist that a person can understand speech with hearing aids if they are given proper training? That doesn't hold true for everyone. It certainly didn't for me.

Your hearing loss is much worse than mine and you weren't able to benefit from HAs as much as I am. You heard at 60db before you got CIs. I hear better than 30db. I have turned the volume on my HAs way down just to see what difference it makes and I lost my ability to hear speech and most environmental sounds.

To be honest, my audiologist was actually surprised I am doing this well but he did encourage me to keep training. If I had less residual hearing, no amount of training will get me above a certain point since id hear only vowels, it would be nearly useless. I am still able to hear alot of consonents so therefore I can still understand some speech.

That makes sense. :ty: for the explanation deafdude.

I agree...my best friend has the same dB loss as I do and she can understand certain people using the phone with her HAs while I cant.

Congrats JennyB!

My hearing does fluctuate to a degree. We are yet to prove it but my audiologist and I have already decided it does. I think a good part of it was that his voice is low and he is a clear speaker (or so my interpreters said). It was tiring, but cool!

That makes perfect sense. :ty: for answering my question. :)

Congrats Jenny. Awesome stuff.

I was on the train (1 and half an hour journey your mind drifts during those hours!!) as i neared my destitation, I actually heard "Next stop Winchester, Next stop Winchester" I had to check with ransom besumed passenger first if i heard it right!

Post that in the CI moment thread and mention it on your blog. Must be exciting for you. :D

The face of a boy hearing sounds for the first time

This is a link for a photo of a little boy hearing sounds for the first time! I love this photo!
I can remember hearing a paper bag for the first time! It was so loud!
My mom sat down and cried!
I hope the link work.

The link worked, and that photo is priceless, very very cool. I remember hearing myself pee for the first time and was absolutely shocked, it made noise!!! Sounded like a freaking waterfall. Horrified to find out that farts made noise!

Oh, forgot to say 'congrats hun" that is so exciting to hear those words, neat!
