Hi,
I just registered and thought I would drop a few lines about myself.

I recently finished school in computer sciences and I'm currently employed as a consultant. I have had hearing problems for a long time, affecting high and low frequencies. I will hear most of what some people may say in a certain environment, and hardly anything when there is surrounding noise or other people talking. For some other people, I can barely hear anything they say even if they are 4 feet away from me in a quiet room.

I had hearing aid by the past, which didn't quite help, but it was more than 10 years ago, and new technologies are available now. I got another evaluation a few months ago, and was shocked by the price. 6800$ for the hearing aids, and another 4000$ for FM transmitter and receivers. Even with my new job, I still cannot afford that kind of spending. Still, I have days where I want to hit my head against the wall. I feel small to have to ask people to repeat all the time. I eat alone, so I don't have to confront that during my breaks.
I asked for financial help from a foundation, but still don't have an answer after 5 months.
If some people have advices that could help me at work, or want to share about their own experience, that would be really helpful.

canada very good about disability problems and your working envroment could be tweaked to help you more...check out rspcd or canadian equilvent....hope you stay on forum you find it helpful

I am not admissible for help from provincial or federal help. I just found out I could get 500$ from my private insurance. I should try meeting a specialist to evaluate what other measure we could take to make my life easier on my workplace. The major thing, I believe, would be the hearing aid. I will try to get in touch with one... it might be several months on the waiting list although. Could you tell me what rspcd stands for?

thank you

I'm in the same boat. Wished I some $ to do something about it. A CI or HA may or may not help but if I had the$ I could at least find out.

Welcome and good luck.

There are a lot of foundations, government programs to help kids overcome that kind of difficulties. It's harsh to see adults are forgotten... even my audiologist had hard time giving me advices.

If at least people answered my financial helps request promptly... I could go on and try to find another foundation.

welcome to alldeaf

do you have problem on issues hard audiolgist? pretty you have financial?

you from Canada? that is correct!

The problem with my audiologist, is that the clinic where she works mostly treat old people. So she is not very aware of the solutions that could be offered for people like me.

Don't get me wrong, I know I insisted a lot on the financial aspect, but I think I could benefit a lot from advices people could give me. Sure, there is a part of the problem that could be solved with the hearing aid, but advices are golden.

If you could give me some from your own experience, it's would be very welcome.

I am not admissible for financial aid in Quebec from the government. They only pay for few model, and they evaluation hearing loss at 500, 1000, 2000... and I don't have 35 decibels loss at those frequencies (higher and lower, yes).

To go on a more positive tone, I went to a museum yesterday. They distributed FM system to everybody. For the first time, I miss only 3 words in an hour. After that experience, I am really hopeful I'll find a solution soon, even if I still have to fight for it.

Hi, welcome!

I was having the same issues as you (I ended up getting hearing aids). I had a little notebook that I carried around with me that I would get people to write in if I couldn't hear them. I found a lot of people weren't patient with me but I found a couple good people who help me out a lot. Sometimes just explaining how you're coping helps people to understand and be more accommodating.

I should carry one, but few time in the past I literally got laugh at for asking people to write things down. I feel like some people are cooperating less because I could hear what they say at some moments... but not at others. I try to have people confirm details by email to make sure I get all of them at job, when I work on a file.
