I have tried this in the past with no luck but I don't want to give up.

If you live around the greater Sacramento area and would be interested in becoming my tutor, please let me know. I am just beginning ASL.

Pay is pretty good, earn a little extra cash on the side.

PM me if you are interested.

Ditto what Mew said :). I have an old Comic Chat friend who lives in Sacramento now.

I know nothing about video cameras on computers; but, could either of you help that way?

Did you try ASL Buddies group on Google Plus? They seem to have some California members in that group.

This could help in the mean time Angel

Try lifeprint.com/index.htm

If she wishes.

For me though I think "in person" is a lot better in learning/practicing ASL. Video does work but at least for me it is a little limiting space wise and distance (With my vision fingerspelling is already hard to follow sometimes...:( ).

I felt ridiculously rusty when I went to the DeafNation Expo last weekend...

You are so right, I want a person who I can interact with face to face. I have all the books, videos, work books etc. When I first went deaf we hired a tutor through a recommendation and it ended up they were JW's. They eventually started with scriptures and tried to suck me in. That didn't last very long.

I guess I am looking for someone who can hang out with me and teach me signs "real time" while living life.

There are certain groups that aren't welcome in my neighborhood, and that's one of them. We've been trying to keep them away, but they are so stubborn, and I think desperate, too.

There is a thread somewhere here on AD. Seems JW's have a thing with deaf people. They have a way of finding us. After I got rid of the first tutor we found a really nice couple for my second tutor......they were JW's also. That is OK if they just stick to tutoring ASL but it always goes beyond that.

If I lived there in California, I wouldn't even mention it..... just stick to what I'm supposed to do, and leave it at that. Anything else stays outside your door.

Oo JW.. Lol i got rid of some using asl. I hope im thinking of the right jw

The group in Oak Park, IL does not use ASL. However, you have just given me a grand idea. If they show up here again, it's all ASL for me-- that should do it.

Ahh but if you do that.. the JWs will find a way to send a deaf JW. That happened to a friend of mine who lives in northern CA. He says deaf JWs somehow found out his physical address and kept bothering him. I have heard instances where a hearing JW goes but if they encounter a deaf person, the next visit from a JW is a deaf person or one who knows sign.

Too bad I didn't get to use ASL with them when I lived in PA- we used to get them coming by every so often.

This group has several deaf people in it already, which is quite sad. And they have already been harassing us quite a bit, because they keep calling the Public VP here at my house asking to see one of my roommates, and I don't even bother telling her, because of her age. She needs peace and quiet, and I'm not gonna let them harass her. And they've earned a permanent place on my blocked lists for good.
