Hybrid Vehicles?

Is it true that there is a risk for people with pacemakers or CIs to drive or ride in a hybrid vehicle?

Several people has told me this by word of hands, so I was wondering if anyone know about this, provide info and elaborate further of this matter?

no harm to CI but interference is possibility like Lucia has mentioned that when going near a place of business that has microwave, she hear humming or buzzing. *shrug*

It is not supposed to hurt ur CI. Actually the electric motor have magnetic shield around it. Also it's a Direct Current motor as well. Some Hybrid use Alternating Current. Since that the voltage is high and amperage is low. It should not affect CI. Microwave ovens do not interfere CI same way. I'm not worrying about it.

ONe thing I should worry about is Junkyard Magnets!!! It'll damage CI and also suck implant out under ur skin. So don't go near it. I went to Junkyard myself and saw 20 inch diameter junkyard magnet about 40 ft away. I got leery but decided to move on as long as they do not hoover over me. LOL
(I'm just being tough guy tho). Also I was warned by Audiologist not to use MIG welder. OHH Sheesh!! I love MIG welder!!! But I DO get conflicting report that other deafie w/ CI used MIG welder w/o problems. But I was told that I'm allow to use ARC welder.

I will learn more about it later.

When I say microwave, I was not referring to microwave oven :D

What? The junkyard magnet can suck the device out of the CI user's head? That's scary!

even any metal that implanted in body like steel pins, pacemaker, steel plate on head etc.. *shrug* the operator of crane with magnet will not enable the magnet when it is over people. junkyard magnet is a temporary electromagnet.

Oh, that's good to know! Just the thought the magnet sucking anything out of the body is just scary. It is a good thing that the magnet stays in the junkyard and can be disabled.

Yes, it's not the habit of the general public to be wandering around junkyards anyway - health and safety regulations will prohibit it. Besides, I can't say I've had a pressing desire to switch careers and become a junkyard crane operator. Bit of a non issue really :dunno:

bwahahahahaha, *looks for a 25,000 volt electric magnet* and suck up alll the CI parts off their heads and acts innocent.

Just kidding!

By the way, I think it's the magnets or the fequency of the electric motors cause interfence with the CI users. I wish people think twice before getting CI in the first place because lot of CI users lose ability to do lot of stuff like deep sea scuba diving, working with high magnetic fields and so on.

That's fine. If you frequently deep sea diving beyond 82ft depth then don't get a CI. Frankly, I don't scuba dive and have no interest in doing so, nor in being a NASA astronaut or being a crane operator at a car junkyard. I'm just a boring accountant who has worked mainly in the hearing world and getting the CI has helped me do my job much more easily. A lot of the problems that people keep on raising about CIs are not even on my radar in terms of interfering with my normal day to day life. I suspect that the majority of people who get CIs are like me.

Besides, the very nature of deafness itself restricts people from doing certain activities that hearing people have the freedom and choice to do - e.g. armed forces, working in high telephone usage occupations etc. You just accept it, adapt and get on with it :)

***Rolling Eyes***

For general everyday life, having a CI is a non issue. There are not many specialized jobs that a CIer couldn't do due to the nature of the job having an impact on the CI.

For some of us, those so called "limitations" are easily traded off for decent hearing. I much prefer to hear than to worry about being electrocuted, drowned (or worst get the bends), or other nonsense.

Interesting!
I can learn something new from you guys any day of the
week!

Personally? Even IF I used to scuba dive past 82 feet, or were a crane operator, I'd gladly give that up for the chance to hear. If that kind of thing is something somebody can't live without - then they shouldn't get implanted, but I bet that this won't/doesn't affect the majority of implantees.

I don't care that much about scuba diving, or being a crane operator. So, not a problem for me. :D I never go to junkyards anyway.

I drive a 2004 Prius and frequently transport children and adults with CIs, hearing aids, and BAHAs. No one has ever made a single complaint to me about interference. That being said, my 16 year old daughter says the security system at one particular Borders store drives her nuts when she walks through it, but only when she has her FM boots on. But I don't know enough to know what the mechanism is that causes the feedback to go nuts.

Its called electronic interference. There is a frequency resonance where it meets the frequency of the HA/CI/Whatever in that mode that causes that. I haven't ran into that yet with my CI but my HA (before CI) would do that with certain stores or with a bank's security device in the ceiling. Ooooh, I hated that back then. In fact, you can do it now with any HA and put it into telecoil mode and listen to your PC. Makes for interesting listening...

But obviously she is still alive to tell the tale? :giggle:
