I'm curious what's your opinion on Hybrid cars? I thought that'd help save people money on gasoline, but on the other hand, the battery and maintenance would not be cheap! Would it be worth to have hybrids and can it last long?

And opinions on environment friendly vehicles such as electric cars, Fuel Cells, so on...

Save Gas + battery/maintence = less cost than suv or Hummer?. We would need to know how long to run the battery and need maintenance.

In next five years...these cost would go down like HDTV's price go down and gas may go high. Yup, suv and Hummer would get better abit on mpg.

I would said that American goverment may not want to be strict law on any cars for enviroment due many big cars came from America's car company to save their business and workers into the own country.

Depending on where your planning to drive.

Hybrid vehicles is perfect for those who drives around city alot.

Hybrid vehicles is NOT ideal for those who drives on highway all the time.

Cost of batteries will be very unlikely decrease as much as those HDTV, computers, etc... Why? Batteries aren't really much of technology and they are hardware dependent.

Hybrid isn't really right vehicle for me anyway.

I have a 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid with 100k miles. I get around 44 mpg city and over 54 mpg highway, depending on temperature, kind of road, wind speed and direction, driving style, etc. I love my car.

I'm curious why it isn't for highway driving?? dang I didn't even know that cause I have to commute about 100km one way to work... grr... For me the replacement cost of the battery I think it's gonna be a pain in the butt for the recycle and garbage hills..and rather save that money for something useful than wasting it on the car.. Also what if in an accident it sure is a waste of MOney as the car doesn't depecriates (sp).

Why? Remember when you drive in city, you always stop and go, right? The idea of Hybrid is simple, when you do braking you charge your battery by transferring the energy you have lost on brake into battery, and then when you get going on green light, you take out that energy from battery then gas take over by charging again and assist electric motor by keep going...

Verses

Highway, there is almost no stop and no go, there is no braking to kick in, no nothing, and you will end up get less mileage on gas than if driving in city!

Hope you understand the concept of Hybrid.

I already knew it long time ago! I already explained in other post that it is NOT worth the investment in long term! I am certified electrican (Not practicing much nowadays) and I have understand how batteries are. They do NOT live forever! They have finite life expectancy, usually 5 years and the cost that I checked, and was right about it.
These hybrid is perfect for deliveries, USPS, etc but for average commuters, I don't think so.

After my calculate, it would be good investment *IF* gas price is around 10 dollars a gallon... Its still in neighborhood of 2 bux a gallon so therefore it isn't worth the investment.

I looked in the hybridcars.com website and to see the battery replacement costs.

HybridCars.com - Battery Replacement Costs

and seeing the cost of replacement :eek3:

Actually mild hybrids (Honda Civic, Accord, Insight) get better mileage on the highway than in the city, because they have lean-burn engines that are very frugal with gas. Mild hybrids never run on only the electrical motor alone, but use the electric motor to add torque to supplement a small, low-horsepower engine. Pure hybrids (Toyota Prius, Camry, Highlander) get better mileage in the city than on the highway because they can run on electric motor alone at low speeds, but use the gas engine at higher speeds. Both mild and pure hybrids shut off at a stop so gas isn't wasted idling.

Thanks for the clarification, lol I sure alot of people did buy it when the gas went up awhile ago lol... wow that's cool you are a certified electrican smile... I need one for my TH since I have to follow corporation rules to hire a certified one to upgrade as so many places in this place needed an outlet lol.... I wish I could be able to plug in my ipod in my new car but it doesn't have an aux output boohoo... ... I'll live.. thanks and have a great evening smile..

The maintenance of the batteries is a huge environmental problem and yes, very expensive. When they have to be replaced, watch out .. it wont be cheap. I hear you have to have the computer re programed, the entire battery packs replaced, sometimes new wiring harnesses installed, etc.

I don't think hybrids are all that great anyways for the mpg most get. Some don't even get 30mpg city i.e. hybrid suvs.

Hohoguy, nice looking car. They pay interpreters well now huh? I know those hybrids are not cheap!!!!!!!

I've researched that their batteries for the Toyota Prius are reliable than you thought. You don't have to replace the whole battery pack because there's one of the taxi driver who drives a Toyota Prius on a daily basis for taxi services. He hasn't had any battery failures and it has over 200,000 miles on it already.

Sometimes, one battery node can fail, which cause all the batteries to stop working. You'd have to replace one and everything will be fine after that. Dealers just want to make money by replacing the whole battery pack at once. It is still drivable even after one or a few batteries fail.

Thats true, they probably replace batteries that can still be recharged. Its all about making money.
