Governor Haley has declared state of emergency for SC. Schools will close and lanes reverse tomorrow.

Florida already making preparations.

Haiti, Cuba, Bahamas and other places in danger zone.

In my local area, stores are already running out of propane, and gas lines are forming.

My family is preparing. Our grandson's college will be evacuated so he has to be picked up from the school (located in the low area of downtown Charleston).

Ugh!

Does state of emergency include the ban on price gouging?

[I did capitalize "Matthew" in the title.]

I don't know if it's included in the state of emergency but I know it's not tolerated in our state. I'm not sure which law covers that.

Interesting, hurricane seasons aren't fun at all.

I remember about Katrina caused biggest spike with gas price.

I found out that grandson's college will close at 5:30 p.m. tonight, so his parents will be picking him up soon.

Our family is staying, not evacuating. After the nightmare evacuation we experienced for Hurricane Floyd we decided "never again."

That was because oil production in the Gulf area was disrupted.

Oh wow, because of bad traffic congestion?

That happen with my title for the Jewish holiday too

Be safe Reba! I not sure what going to happen in Massachusetts yet, it been reported we could get rain from the hurricane on Sunday . I think 7 people died so far b/c they didn't follow orders to evacuate . :(

Worse than that.

From one of my old posts:

...Some of the worst traffic jams occurred exiting Charleston, South Carolina. It took some people 16 hours to drive from Charleston to Columbia - normally less than a 2-hour drive. In 1989, when Hurricane Hugo whacked the city, Gov. Carroll Campbell had quickly ordered that all lanes of Interstate 26 be reserved for westbound traffic out of the city. But in 1999 state transportation planners decided that this exodus strategy was too disruptive and dragged their feet in repeating it - dallying 8 hours after the order came in to reverse lanes.

Being in an auto is among the most unsafe places to weather a hurricane. If Floyd had sped up and caught the jammed motorists, the result could have been the biggest hurricane disaster since Galveston in 1900. Charleston's mayor, Joseph Riley, was outraged and denounced fellow Democrat Gov. Jim Hughes: "What you're doing is running the risk of killing my people." The Charleston Post and Courier editorialized: "The state was unconscionably inefficient in its evacuation effort.... Though the traffic was bound to be bad, the state's inept strategy made it much worse than it had to be."

Once people got 100 miles or more inland, many found no hotel vacancies and were left to wander like gypsies across the landscape. The traffic fiascos were repeated in many places when people sought to return to their homes. The return was not helped by the fact that many service stations were out of gas.

Costs of the Evacuation

The evacuation cost more than $2 billion, according to state emergency experts. Clinton and Witt painted the evacuation as a success because of the limited number of fatalities. However, assuming that the 2.5 million evacuees lost an average of two days each, the total time lost from the evacuation was equivalent to the normal life span of almost 250 people. Since 95 percent of the cost of the evacuation was borne by the evacuees, the government can proclaim it was a great success - simply because politicians and bureaucrats don't have to pay the bill....

King of Chaos: The Fiasco of Floyd

We were stranded on on two-lane backroad with thousands of other people, in our cars, not moving for an entire night, with no facilities anywhere. It was a nightmare. The closest motel room we could make reservations for (the day before we left) was Tennessee.

When it gets to New England it should be much weaker but I know that you would like to at least get the rain that you need. No one wants the wind.

Oh wow, that's horrible, Alabama had entire of south I-65 reversed from Mobile to Montgomery during Ivan.

If you evacuate from PCB so it won't make situation better because services like hotels, motels and road lanes are limited in South Alabama (south of Montgomery).

I had unpleasant road trips between outside of Montgomery to PCB due to limited AT&T network so can't upload or post on FB about update with road trip, but it is barely sufficient to surf on AD forum so I'm glad that vacation is over.

PCB? I am not familiar with the area and can't come up with what PCB stands for.

Yeah the news was saying we'll get some impact from it most likely rain and wind . I don't live next to the ocean , people that do have only two ways off the island one by a road that could get flooded out or by boat and that won't be safe . Our trees are really stress out from the drought so we could have a lot of trees getting knocked over if get really high wind. I am going to stock up on bottled water Wednesday .

Panama City Beach

Most southerners refer as PCB, also a lot of midwesterners and northerners went there too.

For me, I usually stock 1 month supply of water bottles (in bulk of larger package).

I checked the weather for mu city in the morning and it said we had a 80% chance of rain and I checked again tonight and now a 40% chance of rain on Sunday . If it keep going this way we might get very little rain.

Just stocked up on kitty food. Kitty will be happy. :D

Also filled my gas tank, but will probably do it again later this week (I keep it near 1/2 tank). Bought milk and chips since all my other essentials are ok. I hate when a storm is coming around my grocery shopping day (Fridays). :p
