if the school for the deaf you attended was being torn down? That's what is happening with the Wyoming School for the Deaf building. The state owns the building, but it is the local school district that owns the land. And since the deaf school is connected to the elementary school that the school district wants to replace, both are being torn down so the new elementary school can be built.
A memorial of some sort will be put up when the new building is up (a bench or something, hasn't been decided yet). And the library and resource center for the deaf which currently is inside the deaf school building will be moved to a diferent location later on.
The local deaf community and the former students (myself included) are NOT happy with the building being torn down (especially considering, while the elementary school might be in bad shape, the deaf school building is still in very good condition just needs new wiring).

I just wanted to get your opinions on this.

I have never attended a Deaf school so not sure how I would feel. I know some buildings at some deaf schools have been torn down due to safety reasons but if there was no reason, then I would have mixed feelings. It would depend on the new building plans.

Is the building being torn down to build a public elementary school?

the old deaf school and elementary schools are being torn down for a new elementary school. deaf school will not be rebuilt, and really, the deaf school building is still in really good condition, just needs new wiring. But the school district owns the LAND, and wants the land for the new school (state owns deaf school building) since the old elementary school is beyond repairs. And the district just wants to get rid of the deaf school building, get it out of the way so they can have the entire land to use; they don't care if the deaf school is still in good condition (it'd be cheaper to just fix the wiring at the deaf school and replace elementary only).

So you mean they are getting rid of deaf school so that deaf students have nowhere to go? Or you meant they are bring a new school for deaf students?

I would think new building is nice for deaf students since they can add fancy technology for deaf students? If not, then yeah, that sucks for those deaf students.

I understand the sentimental values that a school can bring...but nothing lasts forever.

Did your school protested any? Did they try to fight back? What did they do?

Only the public elementary school will be rebuilt. the deaf school was closed in 2000 but the main deaf school building continued to be used as a library and resource center for the deaf.

as for protests, there hasn't been any. The news is now being spread throughout the local deaf community, as the plans were just recently confirmed on Thursday afternoon.

Oh I get it! I would protest if the building was proven to be still in good condition. That really sucks!

Curious..why did the deaf school close? Where did the deaf students who attended the school go?

I went to Wyo deaf and blind school long time ago. They shut down when I was teenager. I am so glad that I moved out from Wyoming because Wyo is not my favorite. I moved to Utah, I never go deaf school because my parent wanted put me in hearing school. I always had a interprter in my all hearing classes. Our jr high school had 8 deaf students. Our high school had 5 student. Not many. I thank my parent for put me in hearing school so I can learn how talk to hearing people. I get along with hearing people and deaf people. We are human being!

I was told from wyoming old classmate that they shut down because not enough deaf students in school. I don't know their real reason. My old classmate said our age student were not in deaf school anymore because we were in hearing jr high school and high school. deaf school closed when I moved to Utah. I dont know when they closed.

Same with Utah School for the deaf and blind. This is what I know of. Sometime in the 90's the state decide to build new deaf school on different location (I would say about 7 to 10 miles away). Then they will torn down the old deaf school. Most of deaf were surprised because the old deaf school goes to public school and still keep the old building and fixing up inside and out. They torn down the other two buildings.

I attended the deaf school from K to 2nd grade then mainstream public school.

I don't really care about old deaf school but many other deaf are upset because they want to keep it in history. At the new deaf school is nice and different but IMO they don't provide good educations. I was teacher aid for three months and not happy about it. I don't like their education and I wish they give good education to the kids to learn better.

I'm wondering what year was the deaf school built, and why it can't be turned into a 'land mark'..saving it from destruction. The need to rebuild the other school is deemed neccessary and appropriate, however, to destroy, tear down the 'deaf school' doesn't. Nothing is mentioned with how close these two buildings actually is. If the taxpayers, those that live there and within that state realize how much more money could be saved IF the deaf school wasn't demolished and simply upgraded with such things like new wiring, etc.,...the building itself could be of enormous benefit to the community for other practical uses.

Therefore, if enough people realize this, then just maybe, maybe the deaf school can be salvaged and used with good benefits to the community itself as well as being a land mark. ;)

both deaf school and elementary school are CONNECTED. the deaf school was added to the elementary school building in very early 1960's. As to why the school was closed, there werent any actual students enrolled at the deaf school... only 1 was at the deaf school, all other deaf students were mainstreamed with interpreters at public schools. The state said it wasn't worth the money to continue paying for the deaf school services with just only 1 student there.
After 2000, the library and resource center for the deaf continued to be used at the deaf school building frequently; sign classes are taught to parents, new parents come to the library/resource for help and info, books and materials are always being checked out and sent to people throughout the entire state. The deaf alumni was hoping that a small "museum" could be created at the current deaf school building.

here;s the article about the school: Casper Star-Tribune
