I appreciate all the input here. I'm not a stupid person, but I am just now trying to understand being deaf more. I know to look under a door... LOL! The instance I had in mind had no way to look under the door. A family dressing room/bathroom at my health club can get locked after you leave it - so maintenance people need to check to see if people are inside before unlocking again. Also, changing rooms at clothing stores sometimes have longer doors - and only sales people have the key. They knock first to check for occupants. So it's not a dumb question.
