when you use VRS (SORENSON) with a cell phone, do you use an ap?

My sister only pays for text plan right now so we need to know if we need a voice & data plan also.

Does she need ntouch also?

She is looking at an iphone but I see the Samsung Galaxy Note II is popular too. Is one easier to use than the other?

I would recommend Samsung. You'll have an easier time getting the app from Google Play.

As for voice and text, you don't need those for ntouch; they're totally separate. However, be aware that once you install the app and sign up for the service, they will have access to all of your personal info.

ntouch is for the deaf and HoH only. I have it on my phone, and no hearies are allowed to have it, per the FCC.

thanks for your reply..........I have a couple more questions

Do you need ntouch app to use VRS? or is this the only way?

If you have a home VP number, will it flash on your cell phone also or do you use your cell number?

When you use the ntouch app to call a hearies, does it go through an interpreter operator?

sorry for all the questions........I'm trying to help my HOH sister make a good choice for her next phone so we appreciate any advice

I do not mind the questions; I am glad to help.

You asked about the ntouch app to use VRS, and the answer is yes.

For a flasher, the answer is also yes. Many Android phones will flash, depending on the kind of phone you buy. The best ones are Samsung or ZTE, which is what I have, as it not only flashes, but it vibrates, as well, to catch my attention. I'm not sure about Apple, though.

For calling hearies through an interpreter, the answer is yes to that, as well. This is required in the event of a major emergency. I always bring mine for that reason. I hope this helps.

If you have a home VP you can use the MyPhone feature from Sorenson VRS, and have that combined with her ntouch mobile and ntouch VP (if she has one). If she has a VP-200, a separate number will be needed.

Easier than what? Downloading from the Apple Store is just as easy.

Who is "they" in your statement? Ntouch doesn't grant them access to all of my personal info. What do you mean by that?

Okay. If you're downloading ntouch mobile from Apple, you'd need iTunes to do that, while at Google Play, you wouldn't need anything but your e-mail.

As for who "they" are, it would be Sorenson VRS. If you downloaded ntouch mobile from Google Play, it says that you are agreeing to let them access your stuff on your phone. Small price to pay, cause I don't hear on the phone like I used to. You gotta read the fine print. It's very clear what you are agreeing to. Same thing with ntouch PC. Heck, I believe they mention this at Sorenson VRS®, where they explain what they do with the information they have access to. I didn't read it, but it's somewhere on there.

What sort of information are they accessing from us anyway? Name address and what else?

Hey, this is myth. For one, I used to work for Sorenson and they do NOT have time for this crap. They do not have enough manpower to snoop anyone needlessly. Finally, no FCC don't allow that anyway. If they do, they stand to lose millions of dollars. The ONLY time that I know they do enter customer device is when customer is having trouble using the product, and they (Sorenson) really don't care what one got on their (Customers) device and will never collect information except any technical related issues (This is used to figure out why there is problem and why customer complained, and improve them), so don't spread the myth.

Hmm. Then why did Google Play put that in there? I was just speaking as to what it said from Google Play, and truth be told, I didn't even know if the information was accurate or not.

Its required by Google, VRS providers don't have choice, same with Apple.

If you want create a app yourself which you CAN and want to upload for anyone to take, app developers are bound to adhere Google or Apple TOS (Terms of Service).

So it's not SVRS fault.... Google made it that way. Now I understand more clearly. I wasn't trying to look for trouble-- I just wanted to be honest, but I didn't know what to say or how to find out. I have no interest in blaming SVRS-- I just wanted a more clear understanding, and now I have it, and I wanted people to understand better, too, but wasn't sure how.

No you aren't. Best advice you could do is refer them to VRS provider because they DO have better information than you got.

That's probably true-- there's some concepts I'll never truly understand, and SVRS is better at that than I am.

You don't need itunes anymore, but if you did, so what? It's free!

On my phone it asks me to grant it access to my contacts. I have right to say yes or no.

That was then. Now it's different. As for iTunes, my friend who has an iPhone 5 would beg to differ with you, cause she needs iTunes to get her ntouch mobile app. I'm pretty sure it's free now, but with a Straight Talk phone, it's probably different for her.

I guess she is not good with technology or don't understand how to use App Store yet. I don't really need itunes for a few years. Everything storage on the iCloud for address book, Cal, notes, reminder, etc.

Part of your assessment is correct, but not all of it.

Too bad for her. I downloaded it directly to my iPhone 5c from the App Store. I also did the same with my older iPhone 4. No iTunes needed at all. It's not my fault if she is not up-to-date with Apple technology.

Same here.

With any smartphone - you use an app for VRS calls. you can use ntouch, p3, ZVRS.

no- data only is all you need.

Does she need ntouch also? again :

Its all based on your preference. apple or android. take your pick.

thanks for your reply..........I have a couple more questions

Do you need ntouch app to use VRS? or is this the only way?

For a deaf person to make a VRS call on smartphone yes app is only way.

If you have a home VP number, will it flash on your cell phone also or do you use your cell number?
NEITHER! it all comes down to the VRS provider. sorenson and ZVRS is a seperate account number for each device. purple (p3) uses one account with one number allowing you to use any device you log into with for same number.
When you use the ntouch app to call a hearies, does it go through an interpreter operator?
yes .. as with ANY VRS product
sorry for all the questions........I'm trying to help my HOH sister make a good choice for her next phone so we appreciate any advice

its fine- that what we are here for. Really - the best choice is any newest phone within the year should work. is your sister used to mac? get iphone. is she used to PC? get android. or iphone. Has she used a smartphone before? then stick with same type. none apply here? then what phone are you using or plan to use? if you and she get the same phone - you can help each other with issues and/or tricks neat things for phone. For example -
I am a pc and android guy and my son likes apple. I told him he is on his own for help- but i can research and fix his issues if needed as I am a computer guy.
