I wonder do anyone here know how to sign Pittsburgh's football team Steelers? Since I am from Minnesota, and I don't know how to say Steelers in ASL. Thanks!

I was taught that all proper names are fingerspelled. You could just sign 'football team' then use name sign for Pittsburgh or FS. I don't know the city/name sign for Pittsburgh though.

Am I an idiot for asking question??? Oh well..

Not at all! A lot of proper nouns, specifically sports teams (since that's what you're talking about) have their own signs (I can think of the Raiders and the Broncos off-hand). However, I've yet to see a sign for Steelers. I do interpret for a student who is a big Steelers fan, so I will try to remember to ask on Monday. :)

My philosophy is that if you don't try to learn something new everyday, you start dying. Someone once told me that if you don't ask questions about something, you don't really care. So ask away and I'll try to help. ;)

I have used the sign for 'steel' + the sign for 'person/individual' and first using the 'P' sign over the chest area--hope that helps. ;)

Use the " S " sign then go downwards on your chest repeatedly as if you were wearing the winter coat with the Steelers patch on your coat close to where your chest is.

Do not confuse the sign with the one that says Sherriff, use facial expression with mouth movements to show you mean business when you say Sherriff

A good way to not get confused is to go like this in ASL:

" You know football, that Steelers ( " S " going downwards over and over again on your chest ) then sign " team " won Superbowl 21-10. "

See the Steelers coat for example to help you understand better how to say Steelers, Look at the one that shows the front side of the coat and look for the Steelers patch. Use the " S " sign from there on the front side of the coat.

Hope this helps :) :thumb:

Thank you! You all tried your best, signs varies on regions/states. Minnesotans never sign steelers, just finger spelling.

What are some of the "local" signs for Minnesota teams? Is there a special one for the Gophers? Timberwolves?

Is there a good sign for those little dougnuts they sell at the State Fair? Or those "Pronto Pup" corndogs? I love the way ASL has "dialects" - it's one of those things that seems really amazing for a hearie and not something we'd realize - and it is more proof to me of the richness of ASL and deaf culture in general.
