I believe it's the law to carry weapon. maybe only for Alaskans.  you'll have to check with rangers. My friend's 2 friends carried pistols with hollowpoint rounds when hiking at Pennsylvania. The bear just suddenly charged toward them for no reason and they emptied whole magazines on him. He died just a feet away from them. lucky bastards they are.
