Let's say you sold a lawn mower for $70. Person gave you 4 $20 bills. You would give back 1 $10, 2 $5, 1 $5 5$1, or 10 $1 bills. Does it make a difference?

What if someone bought a dresser for $50? They gave you a $100 bill. You would give back a $50 bill, 5 $10, 2 $20 1 $10. Does it matter???

Depends on what you have available.

When this first came up for me in grade school back in the 1950's we were told to use the least number of coins or bills possible. So, in your example of the $50 dresser and given a $100 bill the preferred way would be to give a $50 bill.

But . . . in the real world the most important thing is that the total amount of change is correct.

my cafeteria in my work building they don't accept 50 bucks due to changing the changes so often.

I would give as many coins and or notes as I could so that I keep the higher denominations to myselve so I have less change. Shops are usually happier for change
