The Press Association: Hollyoaks' Shenton for Kilimanjaro
Hollyoaks star Rachel Shenton is in training to climb Mount Kilimanjaro for charity.
The 24-year-old actress - who plays girly Mitzeee Minniver in the Channel 4 soap - is limbering up to trek the 19,341ft to the top of the Tanzanian mountain in aid of the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS).
Rachel will begin the ten day trek on September 20, climbing in harsh conditions where temperatures fall to minus 25 degrees.
The soap star, whose late father was deaf for the last two years of his life, has been a strong supporter of deaf charities for some years. She learned British Sign Language (BSL) when she was 16 and has since worked as a BSL interpreter and volunteered for Deaflinks, a Staffordshire-based charity running drama workshops for deaf children.
Last year Rachel completed her first ever skydive to raise money for the NDCS.
The Hollyoaks babe persuaded co-stars Rob Norbury and Craig Vye to join her in the 10,000 foot leap from a plane in Bicester, Oxfordshire in March.
She said: "The skydive was the most incredible thing I've experienced in my entire life. The cause is very close to my heart and I encourage everyone to get behind NDCS in helping to overcome the challenges deaf children face in everyday life."
Mike Wade, NDCS Fundraising and Communications Director, said: "We are very grateful that Rachel is once again supporting our work to break down barriers to the achievement of deaf children. Rachel's determination and bravery never ceases to amaze us - trekking Kilimanjaro is an arduous challenge but one that every trekker in the world wants to take on.
"Rachel's commitment to our cause is vital in helping us provide much-needed services to deaf children and young people."
