Hello all,

My name is Nathan and I have an unusual circumstance. I have a normal hearing left ear and a right ear with mild-moderate hearing loss. What is unusual is that no physician can tell me why I cannot hear. The last specialist I saw said something along the lines of having a problem with my cochlea sending messages to my brain. However they could not give me a definite reason. CT scans showed no tumors or anything as well. I was around 7-8 years old when all of this took place and I am now 24 years old with the same problem and no answers. I have a hearing aid and am going to demo an upgraded Oticon Intega 10 for a month. Has anyone else had a similar experience as mine? I have been frustrated over this for my entire life.

I would not begin to speculate on your situation, however, in my research I have found that there are LOTS of cases of unexplainable hearing loss. I spoke to a genetic counselor (short of actually doing the blood test b/c it would prove nothing), and through the hundreds of questions about my husband and I and our history, there is nothing that stands out as any cause, except genetics.
I spoke to our ENT about it, he reviewed the CT scans and found perfectly formed ear parts...yet, unexplainable as to why my daughters cannot hear. He said that it is very common to never know why this is the case. As far as I can tell, you are not alone with your mystery. I know this is no comfort. Sorry.

I think perhaps you may have misunderstood.....it's very common for people to not know the cause of their hearing loss. Maybe they just don;'t know why you lost it in just one ear, and postlingally at that.
Also, it's a good idea to try a hearing aid, but you may not like it. It's OK, if you don't. Aiding seems to be hit or miss with unilateral losses.
