Hi im new here  i live in the UK my son is now 2 and half and on his 2 year check with a health visitor it was noted that his language was very poor he just says 'uhhh uhhh uhhh' that type of thing anyway he was refferd to speech and language and they sent him for a hearing test about a month ago which he failed on high frequency sounds, he went to the hospital today for more tests and again his high frequency sounds were not picked up the audiologist said something about nerve damage that affects him picking up on high frequency sounds and he has to go back again in 3 weeks for more tests, she then said that he wouldn't start speech therapy until they have a clear idea on the extent of a problem with his hearing, he has learnt himself how to communicate with me through sign language that he has actually made up himself, he has taught himself to tell me he needs his nappy changing, needs a drink , is hungry, is tierd, wants to go to bed, wants his dummy, he can also sign car, lollipop, 1..2..3 yes and no (not by shaking his head by doing a knocking sign with his fist) im so proud that he has started to communicate with me now and im trying to help him but i dont know much sign lauguage. Anyway he can here a little the extent isnt clear yet and can understand but he is just not talking. So really i just come on here to see if anyone else has a young child with possible nerve damage and problems with high frequency sounds as i dont know much about it all and also what would they do for him?

thank you xx :aw:

What they can do depends on what and how deep the damage is.
What you can do since he has started making up sign of his own is to start working with him to teach BSL or ASL, anything common so “if” the doctors there cannot help him he is at least using a communication form others will recognize. I also have nerve damage that lead to permanent loss, there are some things they cannot fix.

I have a high frequency loss and I might have that kind of damage though LOL
I ran into that problem as a child and it turned I need hearing aids so I wore them at 6 months old.

Pursue BSL even if he only has a hoh loss. Ask for a full toolbox, BSL, hearing aids/CI, specialized schooling etc.
Even if he has a severe spoken language issue, pursue BSL...he obviously likes sign, so if he had access to BSL he would do awesome!
