Hello everyone my name is jennifer, im taking a class at MSJC. ASL culture. I think this class is very interesting and im learning a lot of deaf culture. THings that i never thought about. I plan to take ASL language next semester. Im planning to be nurse and i hope that by knowing asl it would be easier for me to communicate with my deaf patients. Im doing a homework assignement for this class. Its a survey. Just six questions that i hope someone can help me with. I hope not to offerend anyone with any of these questions. THank you for your help.
1. Do you think asl is a real language?
2. Does society treat you different?
3. How do you dance without music?
4. Should hearing parents of deaf children learn to sign asl?
5. Should movie theaters have captions?
6. Who should pay interpreters, and what should their pay range be?

THank you for your help and i hope no one felt offended.

What s MSJC ?

1. Yes it is language because there are contexts and structures in this language. Methink it s more of dialect language more than written language.
2. Yes society treat us differently because they are scare of unknown.
3. Go to boombox whatever and push fingers in your ears. You will feel "beat" that how deaf people can related to music based on 'feeling'.
4. Yes they need to know that children who are bilingual are very smart so why not take that advantage.
5. OFC. would you go to foreign movie without subtitles?
6. Depends on situation.

No offense taken as we deaf will always have to educate society :)

1. Do you think asl is a real language?

Yes it is a fact..
2. Does society treat you different?

Not lately cuz I am not in the hearing world as much as before but when I was, yes I was treated differently except when I was playing sports.

3. How do you dance without music? I have HAs and I can hear some music. I need it on to be able to dance. If it is off, I cant dance. :dunno:
4. Should hearing parents of deaf children learn to sign asl?
Yes unless there are circumstances that prevents them from finding the time to learn it like working 3 jobs to support their family.
5. Should movie theaters have captions?
Yes...at my gym, all of the tVs (about 20 of them) have the captioning on and judging from my observances, it doesnt seem to bother the hearing patrons. I am so thankful for that.
6. Who should pay interpreters, and what should their pay range be?
I dont know enough about that field to form an opinion.

THank you for your help and i hope no one felt offended.

No offense taken and :welcome: to AD! :)
