My name is Sharon and I live in Birmingham, Alabama.
I'm a hearing person who wants to learn ASL, but that is NOT my only reason for joining!! I'm not taking classes or anything (yet) but the reason I'm so interested in learning ASL is mainly because I love God and as a follower of Jesus Christ and as someone who is being called into a life of ministry, I want to be able to share the gospel with anyone I come in contact with here in the states. I don't mean that I'll ONLY be preaching at people. Lol! That would be obnoxious! I just mean that I am going to be spending my life working with people who have disabilities like myself (though mine isn't deafness) as well as many others, and I don't want there to be a communication barrier if I meet someone who can't hear me. I want to be able to help ANYONE I can! (I'm studying to be a Clinical Psychologist, so most of my "help" will be like counseling, but I want to have a non-profit or at lease sliding scale facility to offer help and hope to people who are suffering, no matter what their financial situation may be!)
So to any of you who are not hearing, please know that I'm not just looking for help with ASL. I know that a lot of people join just to get help with homework and I have seen from reading other posts that that's offensive (and I completely understand why!!) That is not my goal here.. I want to know more about the Deaf community and I am interested in making friends! Not just to use people like a text book or something.. So video chats or ASL tips are not a requirement to talk to me!
