i have had a moderate hearing loss in my right ear for about 2 years...i have seen audiologists and ents ....but they just keep blowing me off!!! they wont do anything to help me hear!! the only words the ent said to me was "its probably due to your braces" im not a dr. but i dont think braces cause unilateral hearing loss....im so fustrated....my grades are slipping because i cant hear my teachers lectures..and im a clarinetist and i can hardly play anymore because i cant hear myself playing!!!! please someone help me!!?

Hi Mercyme... That has to be a very tough situation for you to be in and I can empathize. I know that the others will be able to give you advice in your getting diagnosed. Hang in there...

Mercy,

You know your body better than doctors do. Go to an audiologist for an audiogram and see where your hearing levels are and go from there.

I don't know what audiologists you saw but they shouldn't shoo you off with a mediorce answer. Braces do not take away your hearing.

None of these people have even done an audiogram (hearing test) for you?

Ditto to that! Braces have nothing to do with one's hearing...none, nada, zilch.

Sorry to hear about idiots who won't take you seriously. Go get a hearing test at a reputable place.

thanx all...forgot one thing

im sorry....i forgot to put in my post.....yes they did an audiogram..it showed normal hearing in my left ear....but my right ears cant hear most tones until they increase by 40db (60 altogether) and i was told that was a moderate loss...but they said they wont do anything about it because the ent said it was braces (which is a load of bull)....i dont know where else i can go....i went to the only clinic in town...and all other clinics in the area are owned by the same clinic....im so fustrated...thank you for the input...i will look into other places to go....

I think that when it comes to moderate hearing losses in just one ear a lot of places don't believe it's necessary to do anything about it since you have the other good ear and just leave it. However it sounds like it's affecting the quality and after 2 years I think that they should be able to listen. Perhaps your option is to travel further afield to a clinic more willing to help you?

So this ENT person believes that once your brace comes off your hearing will be restored just like that?

Braces?! They are talking bullshit out of their asses! Go to an implant center, they should be more qualified and know more about what they are talking about. You don't need to have to want a CI to go to an implant center.

That is awful!

Mercy,

Have you talked to any of your teacher's or counselor at school about your hearing problem? That would be a good place to start. You should be able to arrange to have someone take notes for you and or record the lecture. Your education is too important!

I would find another ENT. Because your current ENT is full of SH**. RUN don't walk from the idiot. Something has to be done! I started with a 60 db unilateral loss and had blood work done as well as an MRI before I got a hearing aid. I would talk to your primary care physician about this. He or she can at least order blood work and other tests to rule out any "organic" causes. Make sure they get a copy of your audiogram.

Have you talked to your parents or other relatives about this? You definitely need their support (financial and otherwise) at this time.

GOOD LUCK!!!

aww....thank you for your support....i talked today to my school teacher of the deaf...and she set me up an appointment with the schools audiologist and is going to get me a fm for school use.....
