I've explored through the forums and I don't think I have found a decent answer to my current problem. And, I would appreciate to have a help ASAP considering the fact that I will be going to Scotland for a family reunion very soon (within a week) and will be using my parent's laptop-- Acer - Products which have a webcam installed. I've been doing a few test run by calling my godparents via their VP (using the IP address, I know). It was working perfectly last night. I've made sure that I disabled firewall (for Windows Meeting only). And I tried again via calling them and my best friend. So far the problems are similar. They can see me but on my end, I cannot see them. Any solutions? Thank you for your time and patience.

its not good enough to turn off the firewall of your pc since its software based. you also need to open the ports needed on your router pointing to your pc. without knowing what modem/router software you trying to use on your pc i cant give you the specifics.

Someone had problem with built-in webcam laptop to use Viable Vision or other. he purchased new Logitec webcam . working is fine. You may contact Viable support. Viable.net Homepage

dbarovian- I've contacted them and purchased an outer webcam, I'm still getting the same result.

radioman- Uh, like I said, I'm going to Scotland. So, giving out on the internet service and their modem/router would be invalid, no? But, here it is. I'm currently using RoadRunner and their Motorola modem along with Linksys' WRT54G version.
I really don't know anything about changing ports. However, I guess I can only provide you these along with the speed -- Download/Upload ; 2470 KBPS/ 472 KBPS.

you are missing the point. black screen is due to a firewall issue. there are basically two kinds. software and hardware. going to scotland means nothing if you dont know what hardware you will be using since it can be a different problem there. beleive me , i know my computer stuff. but if you can figure out how to make it work on your linksys router, then you can figure it out simalarity with new hardware equipment in sctland you will be working with.
since you have RR with motorola modem, most people have a simple modem with no firewall so no probklem there. the issue now lies simply with your linksys router. you will need to know whats the ip address of you pc is using on the your linksys and open the video ports from your RR public ip address to your computer ip address . make sense ?

radioman-- It does make sense but what doesn't make any sense to me is; I have tried Viable Vision on my Alienware laptop which is also Vista based. It's connected to exactly same router and it has inner webcam too. It works just fine on my laptop. So, why wouldn't it be working on my parent's laptop. My parent's acer laptop is very new. We purchased it two days ago, so we don't think that the problem lies in the Acer laptop. Nor the Alienware, of course. (I really don't want to bring my Alienware because I am very concerned with the fact that it might get robbed and it's too big/heavy. However, I'll consider the options of bringing it along if there is no solution.) And, about the router ports, is there someone that is willing to explain me about it. Or rather teach me about it? So I would consider my options of bringing these laptop along or not.

I think that better get outer webcam for Acer laptop.

I have already talked with V.V about the software, and they told me it does not support build-in webcam, so i got external webcam and it work flawless.Firewall had nothing to do with the black screen you are getting. It might work sometime but you will get black screen again eventually

Okay, you guys. I did try with Phillips outer-webcam and I'm still getting the same result?

And, oh Latino Heat, like I've said in my earlier post. It worked once or twice with the inner webcam. So it doesn't make any sense to me why it's not working.

ANYWAYS, any suggestions on brand for outer-webcam?

Recommended that webcam have ccd sensor. not CSOM sensor. Make sure to read info on Phillips webcam. I like Logitec Notebook webcam Pro.

Ah! I'll be sure to exchange the phillips for a logitech one. Hopefully that'll provide me with some miracle.

Like I say, it might work sometimes because I have tested them and they do not work well with the inner wecam, I would recommended Logitec, since they told me that. Trying to disable the firwall as well to see if that works

Bad news. I exchanged the Phillips for Logitech's QuickCam chat webcam. And I even disabled the firewall. No miracle is made. (And, it still works from my Alienware laptop. Oddly, with inner cam but I think it's because the Alienware is equipped with BisonCam which used to be under Logitech.)

dbarovian-- On the boxes, there isn't anything about CCD/COSM sensor. I think.

Sorry if I'm acting like I'm not technology savvy. I usually am able to figure things out on my own. Otherwise I wouldn't be running to you guys. :run:

viable vision or the nextalk

I had firewall turned off. But, I dislike the share files. Beacuse I don't want any1 to send me a shared files. I decided to turned the firewall on. I noticed two options that popped up it said unblock or keep blocked. I choose unblocked for viable vision so that I can be able to see myself and see them too. Ever since then I was happy. I never had an recent problem. But the only problem is that I can't received a call but I can call out to ip address. So I'm planning to get my own router. I don't know if my family use same router for each laptop. Will I received a call? Or will have different ip address on each laptop? Or what?

Later I installed nextalk for video. I likes the best. Because it has one-nbr. It came with video, fax and tty. Truly I have been happy that. It is easy to use. I can check my fax message, tty call and the video call and one more is the voice message. All that are the best service that I ever seen. I have always use nextalk with my best friend and family which is make it easier for us.
