Hi, this is my 1st time on a deaf forum so bear with me :)
I'm a 33 yr woman and have been deaf since i was about 5-6 months old due to meningitis. Completely deaf in the right hear and over 67% deaf in the left ear, used to use a hearing aid in the left ear and was fine for many many years. About 4 yrs ago my actual understanding of speech and sounds dropped real low :(, Doctors can't quite figure out why. I hear sounds but somehow my brain isnt processing it to where i understand it anymore. I was recommended the cochlear implant. Thinking of seeing if I'm candidate and try it in the right ear since they have to destroy whatever hearing u have left and i don't want to touch what little i do have in the left ear.

So any advice and also know of any organizations out there in the Pennsylvania and nearby that could help would be awesome. I'm scared my medical might not pay for the implant and equipment if I'm a candidate.

I'm scared of this to be honest lol. but i have been reading some posts and thinking if I'm able to do this and chicken out I'd be a fool lol.

Hello and welcome to Alldeaf! As for organizations, groups, one idea to try is to 'google' it click here for Google and check what's out there-- ;) Also, having certain anxieties, fears and whatnots is normal, afterall, we're humans...am sure the more you read through threads/posts related to it, perhaps you'll have a better grip and be more assured to what you'll want to do. Lastly, but not the least, hope you'll enjoy your stay here in AD! :)

The Great State of Pennsylvania is a tad bigger than a bread box.

Are you east or west of the Susquehanna river?

Welcome to alldeaf!

I hope you stay with us and chat with us as we all need help with each other to get information and vend or get our chest off when we get frustrated or not happy with something. I hope the cochlear implant would work out for you as it is not going to be a miracle but if you like it. Go for it and enjoy the noise or sound. Just be happy!!!!! Welcome aboard.
