Hello,

My name is Sarah and I am almost 19. I am not "hearing-impaired," however, I am "ASL-Impaired." I am currently taking ASL in college. I joined because I had a question about a sign to use in a certain situation, but I might pop in and out every so often.

ASL_impaired...that's a good one! I will have to call my husband that. :giggle:

Anyways..:welcome: to AD!

My ASL teacher sent out an email one time that was about some performance. The email contained a flier and the flier stated that the show would be done in ASL, but have an interpreter for the ASL-impaired. I thought the term was amusing, so I used it here.

I just called my husband that and he loved it! He signs in SEE..LOL!

Hehe! Have you tried converting him to ASL? It's hard to convert over from thinking in one language to thinking in another.

He just learned about 5 years ago..I mean 5 years ago, he knew zip sign language and learned thru socialization, not thru classes. The problem is that he is with hearing people all day and only exposed to sign language with me at nights. Before we had our son, we socialized in the deaf community a lot but now we dont that much anymore and that kinda hurts his ability to sign using ASL grammatical structure. It is hard. Heck, it took me 5 to 6 years to do it . I learned it for the first time at 25 years old and finally became fluent in it around 30 years old. It takes time...

I've heard that phrase before. "ASL impaired". I thought it was really cute. That performance you mentioned wasn't a play called "Big River" was it? I think that's where I first saw that phrase.

LOl, that is very cute. ASL_impaired. Love that. :welcome: to alldeaf, btw. And don't worry, you will have cochlear -ASL (that is i can sign better, like I can hear better,, LOL)

Hello and welcome to Alldeaf! Unique name you have there--hope you'll enjoy your stay here in AD! ;)

Have a great day!

I don't know. My guess is that many people have used the term.

Hello from another ASL very impaired member! I've been a member for about 2 1/2 years and it has been a lot of fun. I, like you, take classes in ASL. I can't wait for the day that I can be call ASL slightly impaired. I am so impatient wiith myself. I want to be fluent so bad.

What do they say? Ah yes: patience is a virtue.

Welcome, and have a graat time here.
