hi everyone,

i'm a student from texas studying in nyc. I have just recently started taking ASL I and am really enjoying it. I am hearing impaired and assisted by bilateral aids. I used to know sign language as a kid but forgot it all. In any case, I was wondering if anyone knows of any events or functions that I could attend and perhaps talk with other newbies to ASL or veterans willing to take their time and be patient in talking to a newbie! Just trying to find ways to immerse myself like students of any other language would.

Thanks so much!
-Matt

Hello and welcome to Alldeaf matty83! Even though you have inquired about social events or functions where you could improve on your skills using ASL with others...one place to consider checking out is your local Deaf Club...also by being in Alldeaf, I'm sure you just might meet another member that does live nearby or has more useful information to aim for in your quest to practice and improve your signing....

Anyhow, I hope you'll enjoy your stay here in Alldeaf and hope you will be able to accomplish on being fluent using ASL! ;)

Slowly our ranks grow! :) Welcome "home" matty! I'm trying to think of resources for you in NYC. Maybe Lexington School for the Deaf in Queens (?) would be a good place to start looking for resources. It would also be a good place to get audilogical services while you're at school. (Before this year, I had audilogical services back home. Now I get them out of Clarke School for the Deaf.....and they RAWK!)

Hi , I can see where matty coming from. I have been to deaf school but have forgotten some asl . Where I live there no deaf club or deafs in my area that I know of. If there are I haven't seen them. (small town) I can read asl probably 60% of the time but am out of date, in hand, body and mind as I haven't use it in years because there wasn't anybody to sign with. Chit I am now 59 and was just turn down by sorenson because I told them I was rusty, do have some oral friends online and would love to get sorenson to get my asl up to date. I figture probably 6 months it would take with sorenson and afew friends calling me twice aweek for 15-30 mins each call . They know I am rusty, even visited one not long ago in person. Biggest problem I have is small town and darn cheap they are , leave alone asl classes in college as I can't afford it and surely can't get help anywhere here. ASL classes should be free for the deaf but isn't here. Bad enough couldn't even get real-time when I needed it the most as again town, court, lawyers are to darn cheap and don't care. I know it's against the law and do have my rights but this town sucks, would have to travel 100 miles or more and be lucky to find a lawyer that would back me 110%. Well enough of that chit here. Only if sorenson woud let me have a VP-100 I could be up and running in no time with the help of afew online firends. Sorenons doesnt' look at it that way, I can understand if a person didn't know any ASL but I do , just gotta be given a chance to get myself going again. Can't get going if I have nobody to sign with. Was hoping sorenson was my way out of my world but guess it isn't as I have been disqualified without them even checking my history recorder. Most think there only 3 worlds out there .(deaf, hoh, hearing) Well that isn't true, there another world between deaf and hoh and that is where I am at and probably end up staying as I seem to be stuck there.
sssssshhhhhhhh club is hoh as they are closer to the hearing world if you know what I mean. From reading here , if I am right your still young matty and living in NYC where there help, so don't give up.
I spend most of my time online and in de chat room that I have just opened, as least I have something to do then just sitting and watch tv, at least it more fun. LOL
Oh, don't tell me to move to another town/state because I can't even afford to move, leave alone where to move if I could.
