Hello in need of opinions

Hello guys I'm new to this forum and look forward to joining in :D

I really wanted to ask your opinions on something.
I'm profoundly deaf with some sight problems and post in some other forums.
I find laughter and self mockery is a good way of coping with restricted abilities (I prefer saying I've got restricted abilities rather than say I'm disabled).

Anyway, I posted a joke about a deaf guy and another about a blind guy.
The able bodied persons who read and replied to the jokes had no idea that my sight and hearing are damaged, and boy did they attack me - accusing me of discrimination!!

I wanted to know just how many deaf or sight restricted people would actually take offence about jokes written by a fellow sufferer?

Sometimes, we have to poke fun at ourselves so I agree with you. I dont think u did anything wrong. Maybe the "able" bodied people thought it would offend us, deaf people. I am sure it may offend some deaf and blind people. It depends on each's personality. I am not anal about a lot of things so I have the personality to take things in stride and able to laugh a lot about some situations or at myself.

Yes, we should all be able to laugh at ourselves, our imperfections and at things that others don't find so funny without being apologetic for it. :)

There is a paragraph within a summary of a book which sums up very well - "Laugh or Cry: Finding the Lighter Side of disABILITIES" by F. Alexander Brejcha and Sharon Hulihan -

"In fact, at times it can be the best way to survive difficult situations. Laugh or cry? Not a tough choice. And we want the temporarily enabled world to see that we can have a sense of humor -- and to invite them to laugh with us. Because soon enough they'll be right there with us; either through age, accident, or late onset disability. To be crude: s**t happens. Better to be ready to be able to help survive it through humor".
 
;Welcome: to AllDeaf forum. It all depended on the kind of jokes that might offend some people, but there is nothing wrong with the way you want to make a joke about yourself being deaf and blind. For me, I like the jokes about deaf and hearing so that we are letting the audience know what was like in that environment. Everyone seem to laugh and not get offend, but you never know if the individual get offend. **sigh** Just keep up with your jokes in order to make anyone laugh and it is better than crying, right?

Welcome to AD! :) I'm also deafblind and at least for me, I don't take offense to jokes about deaf or blind people. I'm like Shel -- I take it all in stride and enjoy the smiles and chuckles they give me. :)
 
Hello and welcome. I am also deafblind. I don't take offence easily even if I didn't neccessarily find the joke funny. I think people can be a little too PC at times.
